Is it better for a girl to get her period early when she's still a kid or later?

I got it when I was nearly 16 (I was by then looking more like a young woman than a baby-faced kid) and I think that's the major reason I had some more time to grow than other girls. For instance, most girls at the age of 14 already stopped growing. Meanwhile I was 5'7 at that age. Now I'm 17 and 5'11.

I think that besides genes, the time a girl gets her period is a contributing factor to her growth. If not then why do many girls that got it earlier hardly ever grow (2 inches at most) or stayed the same?

Also not sure if being involved in several physical activities from an early age and practically always being busy contributed to a delayed period. That's what I read once, that if a girl is active so early on, it can help her grow and delate her period.. giving her more time.
