How do people get through long days without eating and drinking much?

One of my classmates in college makes a 30-min. commute to campus M-F and arrives there at 6AM to first workout at the rec center. Then he goes to his compacted schedule of classes and leaves campus between 7PM-10PM.

He doesn’t eat lunch, only a scoop of ice cream on a cone for a snack. Sometimes he gets a drink of Pepsi, I’ve never seen him drink any water or juice. On his way home at night, sometimes he stops for a slice of pizza. Other times his wife makes him meatloaf.

I’m not sure if he eats breakfast, I should’ve asked him. Whenever a bunch of us other classmates head over to get lunch, we invite him, but he always says he’s not hungry. However, sometimes he joins us and gets that drink of Pepsi. He’s 33 years old and an honorably discharged marine sergeant. He always seems focused and energized.

How does one survive a demanding schedule with such little food and water? And he’s passed the “age of invincibility.”
