I've had a couple of very bad ankle sprains and it sounds almost exactly like my experiences. The "snapping" sound you heard can easily have been from a ligament being torn (aka sprained) and the quick swelling also sounds like a sprained ankle.
You're treating it correctly. With ankle sprains they suggest something called "RICE":
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
I think you still need to see a doctor though. And get x-rays taken. Because you need to take all precautions with an injury like this. Make sure you let the injury heal properly.
Best of luck. Having gone through this twice I know your pain and frustration. But time will heal it :)

Don't forget to take Motrin, or some other similar medication. If you're under 100lbs, take one, if you're over take 1.5 to 2 of them at the recommended times. When I seriously sprained an ankle I didn't bother doing this despite the doctor's demands, assuming it was strictly for pain. This will actually reduce swelling, increase circulation, and improve your healing time. The RICE process others recommend should also be done in conjunction.
You most likely broke it. Is there deformity, or when you press on it, is there a crunching noise?
Better yet, you should get it checked out to be safe! ASAP

RICE
R- Rest, sit down or lay down, take the pressure off of your foot
I - Ice, Ice the sh*t outta that bitch, 30 min on, 60 min off, repeat.
C - Compression, Wrap it up with an ACE wrap or get a Shock doctor ankle brace
E- Elevate, put your foot on top of some pillows to help reduce swelling.
Also get a cane or crutches, it helps. We can't assess it accurately here on GAG. If you haven't already, have a radiologist X-Ray it. Better safe than sorry.
fracture or break somewhere. go to a doctor and get it x-rayed
