What's your blood type?

If you know your blood type what is your blood type? Is your blood type considered rare? Is knowing your blood type important to your health?

My blood type is AB-.

I believe it is the rarest in the world (only 2 or 3 % of people around the world have it) and I can only take blood transfusions from AB- or AB+ (which is another rare type), so if I ever need blood... I could be in a little bit of a jam, lol.

A+ here. It's not that rare. I don't know much about other types. But for my type I try to avoid eating too much meat.

I'm Type B+. The rarest blood type in the world is known as type A-H. It is only found in Norway and less than thirty people in the world have it. It appears to have been an ancient hemstological mutation, but only officially documented about 20 years ago.

Because just like your fingerprints your blood is unique only to you. People have blood borne pathogens and diseases can be spread from transfusions. Research has been known that people do better without recieving blood and heal faster plus there are many other ways to up your blood count besides a transfusion

That makes sense. I'm guessing that you feel the same way about bone marrow and organ transplants, although that could be totally different than blood transfusions. By diseases do you mean ones that are hard to screen for during routine blood tests? If you have a disease like HIV or other STDs, hepatitis, abnormalities of any blood cells, you are not allowed to donate at all.

My blood type is very rare and I would only accept the same type so I'm basically SOL if I ever needed blood, lol

if you ever needed blood check into bloodless alternatives. I need to do my research once again but there is a method they give you that builds up your blood 4 times faster than a transfusion. My aunt was given a transfusion and literally became a chain smoker in the same day and changed her personality and so did my young cousin. People naturally can carry all sorts of things in their blood streams and even if they are deemed "safe" to give doesn't mean they don't have something that can pass

I think the biggest thing with transfusions is whether or not the Rh factor (+ or -) will be accepted by the recipient's own blood. They could essentially become allergic to themselves for a period of time (much like people with lupus, although that is a disease you are born with and it's more complicated).

I've heard about bloodless alternatives - was informed of that a couple of years ago due to the rarity of my blood type. I hope that I'll never be in the position of needing that though, lol

Well they say that nothing can duplicate or replicate blood that is why giving blood is so important. They do test blood for any diseases that is why it is so strict to be donating blood. They are trying to eliminate the spread of infections! I'm sorry to say but if you ever got into a severe car accident they aren't going to ask you what your preference is..they will give you the blood because it will save your life.

I work in healthcare. if you refuse than they cannot give you ANYTHING unless you consent unless a person is unconscious. I already have on my medical record no blood under any circumstance inlcuding death. Also your blood is unique to you that's why you only have it and some pathogens are so small they cannot be seen. regardless yes they can mix but as a result you can still get issues and there are still errors in anything you do.

Yeah, my parents are both ER doctors, and legally they can't actually give anyone anything without the patient's consent or the consent of their next of kin or power of attorney (when they are unable to make decisions for themselves). So giving blood to someone who hasn't consented to it can be considered malpractice. The healthcare professional might personally think it's the right thing to do, but everything needs to be looked at objectively when you are caring for other people.

If you are unconscious and are bleeding to death a doctor has the obligation to save your life. If they do not know who you are (like no identification on you) and you are not able to speak for yourself they will do anything in their power to save your life. They are obligated to do so

Doctors in the ER are obligated to keep you STABLE, that is all. If you come in and you've been shot (for ex) but yet you have no ID, you're labeled as a Jane/John Doe & surgeons will remove all foreign objects from the body. They don't need to give you blood; they try to keep you stabilized until you become conscious enough to either consent to further procedures or sign a DNR, that is if they have no one else to contact to act on your behalf.
