I was a band geek all my life until I started dating the man I'm with now, who LOVES football and Hockey. He convinced me to watch one football game and I made fun of it the whole time and he was laughing with me and it was so much fun that now I can't stop watching. Same with Hockey. that doesn't mean I'm not an academic. I read at least three books a month, I've got two and am working on a third masters degree, then I'm going in for at least one PhD.
As to why they're so fun, why do I watch them over more reading or something similar? Because it's entertaining to sit down with a group of your friends, pick a side and enjoy watching the players battle it out for the win. Seeing the close calls, the great plays, the points that are squeaked out at the last second. And the physical struggle and skill of it all, it's really entertaining. It's like watching Jeprady only... more running and grunting and hitting, hahahaha.

Natural I guess, to be competitive. I like sports too. I never was a super girly girl although I may act like it on occasion. It shouldn't be a bad thing to like sports it's not like its bad. :)
It's completely natural. Even kittens or puppies wrestle around and chase each other. If you throw a ball in with a bunch of pigs, they'll immediately start playing soccer. I'm sure a lot of other animals will do that also. Throw a ball for a dog and they'll love chasing it. It's all just play and it's really fun and good exercise.
I can't imagine not playing any sports. It's not like I had to make a conscience decision to play sports. I think it would have taken every bit of my will power to NOT play sports. That would just seem inhuman to me.
Not being physically active is one of the worst things you could do to your health. It's worse than smoking. Worse than eating nothing but junk food.
Males are competitive by nature and sports are a great outlet. Not to mention most sports are called "games" for a reason, they are fun to play. It's great competition, exercise, some camaraderie, etc. I guess you could say playing sports is like the male version of sleepovers and ladies' night out, it's a combination of things we are inherently drawn to. By the way, I'm a computers nerd and I sing/play guitar, so academic interest and practicing sports are not mutually exclusive. Give it a go sometime, it's a thrill.

ive been a mix of all three (academics, arts, sports). I used to play sports when I was a little younger, (think 5, 6 ish) I've grown up to be a little more conscientious of my academics (I almost failed out of high school) and I became a musician. I guess I just lost interest in playing because it wasn't fun anymore. I love watching them though. guessing you won't be watching the super bowl, eh? it's OK to be academic, but you should learn to loosen up a little and watch some sports or get into music or something along that line. it will make you a well rounded person, that's what people enjoy.
Because it's better than war. Battle is in our genes. We need competitive, team oriented physical activity that serves as a surrogate for that or, as we get older, the ability to experience it vicariously. I know it sounds hoaky but it's real.
Sports and academics are not mutually exclusive.Just want to go on record saying I am a guy and I fucking hate sports, especially professional sports and athletes. Nothing is inherently wrong with sports, but the attention and praise athletic achievements receive is downright ridiculous.
Sports are, in my opinion, one of mankind's most overrated and useless endeavors. "Oh! You can run a ball down a field and pile on top of each other aggressively? Cool! Please explain to me how that adds to your value as a human being..."Girls like sports too. I played "guy sports" in high school because sports are fun. I played football, ice hockey, and hockey while keeping my grades up. Some people just love sports and others don't. Depends on the person.
Men are more active creatures. And we like competition.
I'm more of an academic person too. I don't like any sports, watching or participating.
theres no glory in being intelligent at that age
Good question. Sports are stupid.
