That is interesting.
I know Italy is really a mix of different groups and you can find red haired people around the Po, but I would also say it is a pretty tan country in general. Once a few exchange students came over and they seemed pretty light-skinned, but, then again, I have a friend who is only partly Italian, and he was mistaken for a Mexican once.
Can you tan? I am curious.
With me, I have practically no resistance at all. I freckle, and I don't think the freckles help any. My ancestors came from Ireland, and I think it is one of the most sun-sensitive countries. Curiously, you can find a lot of people with light hair and eyes in Northern Europe who do tan, but I think it would be pretty rare in Ireland.

Many of the Italians that made it onto main screen America came from Southern Italy where most of the "tan" Italians are. You also have to remember that some of the tan Italians may have mixed ancestry and some of the paler one may also be mixed with some french or German. But yeah I agree that it's kinda ignorant to think that all Italians are tan.
I thibk she's a good example of a mixture of tan and pale italians. Is she a good example of the average Italian woman?

People always associate Italians with just the Sicilian look I suppose? That's my guess , I once had a friend who was Swedish and French Canadian and he could get as dark as me in Summer (I'm a brown-skinned African American). People also associate the French and Swedish with being pale and blonde so, he got mistaken as Mexican or middle Eastern often haha
Because Italy is a Mideteranean eara exposed to a profuse amount of light... I read in Don Juan by Lord Byron that Juan is tan and belongs to "the land of sun" .. In A View From The Bridge by Arthur Miller it is depicted that all Italian immigrants are tan, when a blond Italian man comes to the scene they mention that he is not purely Italian..
Whenever you watch movies and stuff Italians are always depicted to have Olivey skin. I have several friends who are from southern Italy an they're very tan, but at the same time I have friends who are from northern Italy and they're pale. So I think most people just have a lack of education about italians

Just how us Lithuanians get assumed to be Russian!!! It's stereotypes. My father was German-Italian, and he was FAR from tan!!
Cutiepiemarzia is Italian and she is anything but tan.
Most people who think that have never been to ItalyBecause typically in pictures you see they are, my bf is part Italian though and he isn't "tan" normally but he can still get a tan
Because Italy is along the Mediterranean, an area geographically known for its sunny days... Also you were in Scotland, the most pale country in the world next to Ireland and my Sutton borough in London.
It's just ignorance. Like how some people assume that all Mexicans are brown, or all people in China are ethnic Han Chinese, or all Muslims are brown.
I've never thought about it, but all the Italians I've ever met weren't tan.
I've never assumed they were tan. by the way I live Italy :)
because compared to northern Europeans, they are?
