Are nicknames a sign of affection?

guy i used to see who i am still friends
he got back with his ex but have stayed in touch due to mutual friend

anyway during our time together practically from the beginning he has always given me a nickname, one a physical attribute of mine, another one that rhymes with my name

and he always is like your so cute, he also calls me weird
even after he got back with his ex he still calls me by these nicknames rather than my actual name unless he is trying to be serious
is nicknames something everyone does or is it a sign of affection?
im 23 just won't let me change on here for some reason

I would believe so, yes. If you have the time and heart to come up with a nickname, you're thinking of something more than 'just' friends. And that is either super best friends or relationship material.

Nicknames are terms of endearment. Whether or not the affection behind them is steamed from romantic feelings or friendship is hard to say.
