How does a man say he loves you more than anyone before me, says he wants to be with me, and wants to marry me, but leaves me for his ex wife?

I met this man a year and a half ago. He was still married but told me they have been done for awhile. That they stayed together for the kids only. She told him a year before that she no longer loved him. She cheated on him multiple times. He would go to the hospital and she wouldn’t go. He went into a deep depression over all of it and went suicidal because of many reasons. When we met I was hesitant about getting together because it seemed soon for him. He swore that he never wanted her back and it was over. I’ve asked him about it many times throughout our relationship. Does his miss is old house, does he miss his old life? No everytime. He would tell me about their relationship and say that’s why he loves me. I’m the opposite of her. I care, I take care of the kids, I am a good person. They have 3 kids together. So after his kids baseball game a couple weeks ago, she messaged him and asked if he ever thought about them trying again. He told me he told her no bc it was over and he was happy with me. She then calls and asks two more times the next week. He told me about it and I wasn’t happy. He told me it was helping with closure. I told him he should of had closure before begging me to go out. He chased me. Then one day we woke up. Said I love you and see you later. That evening we ended. Because he couldn’t stop thinking about his family. He said it wasn’t fair to me that he keeps thinking about his family life. He told me he wasn’t going back to her, but wanted to be single. 4 days later he was with her. Gloating on Facebook. All lies. Why pick out a wedding ring, wedding venue, say you weren’t excited for your first wedding but are for ours to just leave me? I don’t think he ever loved me. I think it was all a lie. I’m pissed I believed him everytime I asked about his situation. I loved him. He told me how amazing I am and to never change. That I deserve more and hopes I’m happy one day. Wtf? All that time together and he can just toss me away.

I dont think he didn't care about you or really intentionally lied to you. I think he lied to himself and wanted badly to move on with you but figured out he couldnt. Peoples emotions r complicated. He also may care for you by leaving you realizing you do actually deaerve better than him as he is not good enough for you w his messy life. And however ypu loved himaybe he is actually right, probably is, that you deaerve better and ypu just dodged a bullet. If you are very angry n sad, talk to him to get closure. Dont hate him, pity him.

He’s unstable. Suicidal even. You knew this. How can you be surprised by this behavior? I’m genuinely curious.

Because he wasn’t suicidal or depressed after we met. All that went away. He was happy. We were happy.

You walked into something that was obviously a disaster. He was not a suitable man if he's already suicidal and saying all those things, because to me when he said he loved you more than anyone else before, that sounds as if he's desperate. You just got to be careful next time and not get involved with someone who has ties to someone else such as marriage. I don't know why so many women fall for that.

I was with him through the divorce. The day it happened he called everyone including my father happy. I guess because his family always told me how unhappy he was married and how much happier he was with me. I believed all of them.
