He never calls now, only texts me, what should I do?

My boyfriend had these days when he was calling me two and three times a day.. So basically I just told him to stop calling so frequently because I felt like I wanted some more time for myself. The thing is, I was kinda rude when I told him this.. After that he stopped calling and started texting me. But after a while he started calling again, only he was calling once a day. We then had this conversation when he asked if he was bothering me when he called. I just replied that he obviously wasn't, but I did not want someone to call many times the same day. He said okay, but after that he completely stopped calling? What the hell, I really don't understand guys... He texts me every day and replies immediately but, I want more than that. We go on dates often, like twice a week or so.. But I still want him to call. Why do you think he stopped? What should I do?

Let me put myself into his shoes.

He cares about you deeply, but he feels that (based on your previous reaction) his phone calls bother you.

The best thing to do at this point is to try and get him to open up about it.

Thanks, but.. How can I get him to open up? You see, I don't want to seem clingy but.. I don't consider texts actual communication. Plus I'll get away for my studies soon, we'll have a long distance relationship. Messages just won't be enough at that point.

You told him to stop calling and he obeyed and NOW you have an issue with him not calling? What is the matter with people? He stopped because you suggested it!

I just told him to stop calling all the time :/ that's all. He called me three times a day or so! 0_0 and we talked for a long time
