He said he was thinking of asking me out, but he didn’t?

I like this guy at work and the other night at after work drinks he told me he liked me too. We had a brief kiss and he told me he thought I was nice, funny and beautiful and wanted to ask me out on a few occasions. We get on really well at work and we both said we have great chemistry.

We exchanged numbers and have been messaging over the weekend. The conversation fizzled out (I will see him tomorrow) but he said he ‘was contemplating asking me out on Saturday night, but decided to crash instead’ as he had a busy day...

Now I’m confused? For someone that likes me and really wants to ask me out, why would he tell me that? Like he can’t be bothered to ask me out! Also, I tried to keep the conversation going via message but he started one wording me until it eventually died out. Now I’m just really confused !
