I never understood that either. People tend to contradict everything they say.
Bills should never be "split." That's communism.

It's simply a play at superiority. All they're saying is "I'm better than you". This makes up about 95% of human interaction.
Possibly because most men still make significantly more money, that women make.

@msc545 Actually, most men do make more money than women do. On average. You apparently haven't looked at the stats on this, or you would know.
Most men work more hours than women do.
Also the "average" is heavily tilted by the rich 1% of the world.
That 1% alone makes so much more money than all women combined that it may seem like "men" make more but an average makes makes as much as an average woman for the same job position.
Plus you have an older generation of housewives who never worked a day in their life tilting the scale in favor men as well but a young woman is more likely to be working and making money now

This is kind of off topic, but I once went with about 19 coworkers to a restaurant. We called ahead and made a reservation, because we knew it wouldn't be easy accommodating 20 people. When we got there, they had pulled a lot of small tables together to make a table for 20. We told the waitress that we all wanted separate checks, but she said she wouldn't do that, because we were all in a group.
We knew it would be a nightmare trying to figure out how to pay the bill and divide it up. We all worked at the same country club, and we were used to giving great service. The customer is always right.
So we just decided to dismantle our group. We pulled all the tables apart and made about a 6 inch gap between them. We weren't trying to be a pain in the ass, but guess what? She suddenly was able to figure out how to separate the checks.
