I would not even ask if he is single, is in a relation or is taken. All of those questions indicate that you are possibly interested in him.

I would take a more subtle approach by making a statement where he has to answer that he is (or is not) in a relation.

You could for example say something like

"your girlfriend must be proud of you" after giving him a compliment on an achievement for example.

Normally, the person would reply either with "yes" or "I have no girlfriend".

Simple but effective.

Usually when a guy says this it has one of two meanings.

1) She cheated on him or did something to break his trust, . Now he has trust issues and finds it difficult to connect with someone, making the process very slow but worth it in the end.

2) He cheated or broke her trust and is wrestling with the guilt that he has inside of him of fear doing it again knowing that the pain that the guilt can cause is unbearable.
