Does my boyfriend sound mentally unstable?

Hi guys! so my boyfriend was sitting on his video games all day ignoring me cus he was mad at me, later he seemed to cool a bit so I told him generally I would appreciate spending more time w him, and he had an outburst and started to rage at me and accused me of trying to start an argument with him, started giving me silent treatment in person then when I tried to gently shake him and tap him to try to get him to talk to me, he was like "you're just making me more pissed by the second" um, ok. So then this morning he continued his hatefulness and said things like "I shouldn't have even gone out with you in the first place, i felt bad for you" "I hate you" "idiot" "I don't love you" "I don't want you in my life" he literally had an outburst over one tiny thing that he perceived to be an argument and then spiraled and said all that stuff and progressively got more and more hateful. Like he literally said I love you and then not even 30 minutes later "i dont love you" "I hate you" and being super hateful, and said "get out of MY apartment" and started getting angrier and angrier, def think mentally something is wrong w him (just fyi his mom was hospitalized mentally for being bipolar as a teen I think and has done meth as a coping mechanism when her mom died and while I cannot judge anyone especially having grief, his family just is very dysfunction many of them have done hard drugs like that at some point and have failed relationships etc even his brother one is a cheater the other is codependent on his wife since he doesn't have a drivers license for some odd reason and he met her at a party doing drugs). so he literally went from being fine to raging and flipping out on me, what do you think it says about him as a person?
