Guys, Kisses (x's) in texts?

So I dated someone for 8 weeks and the whole time he texted he would add an "x" to his message symbolizing a kiss. When we were going through the breakup he stopped them and I told him it bothered me as it felt brutal.
I wrote him a letter a few weeks ago but he didn't check his mailbox until yesterday. He texted me last night with a whole thing which felt formal but the end was a kiss. I replied and got another response, again with a kiss.
We facetimed for half an hour and caught up. I texted him after, again I got a reply with another kiss.
Previously I have said to him its ok to send kisses and he said he didn't feel it right to do so. So why am I getting them now?

Well no we have been texting normally for ages without kisses for weeks. I walked away after an email I sent him last week. The email preceded this and he knew this as he admitted he checked the postmark. The text from him yesterday was long and not required as my email superseded the text. So for him to consider my feelings all of a sudden out the blue would be strange

We live 45 minutes apart. So saw each other a couple of times a week but haven't since early July
