However, asking ANY OTHER girl what you should wear, is a great idea. Whether that's female friends, or a sister, or cousin, or friend's sister (who you've known awhile). But asking for female input is an excellent idea.
Just not the particular girl you're going on the date with. The idea is to look good... while maintaining the illusion that you're able to do that all-by-yourself.

In this case, it would be weird since you know it's at a restaurant. Dress as you would if you were going to this restaurant on your own. If you didn't know the exact circumstances if the date, it would be okay to ask.
Personally, I would only ever ask, if I didn't know what the occasion was or what the venue/location/activity or weather, was or is. Lol.
So personally, I feel like chicks (women) prefer a guy to scrub up nicely (to wash up and look good). Not just good, but look fine.

It would be quite strange to ask the girl that your going on a date with as to what to wear. Let me give you some advice , first of all dress comfortably , whatever gives you confidence and if you are wondering wether to dress smart or more casual know that generally speaking girls dress to impress and look good so your better trying to do the same. Showing the girl you have made an effort will NEVER reflect poorly on you.

I'd say please just dress to impress. Girls tend to dress up even for a minor hangout to impress the guy they're into. It won't hurt at ALL to dress up. No jeans please. If the restaurant is a nice restaurant it wouldn't hurt to look nice too.
