Men, What are your thoughts on women not wearing makeup on first date?

This is just a random question that popped into my mind. I usually do not wear makeup when I'm going on dates (went out with two guys; one became my boyfriend, but later broke up and the other guy and I did not work out) but it was because we went to places like ice cream shops and the beach which did not require a full face of makeup. From a guy's perspective, how would you feel if your date showed up without makeup on? Is it an important aspect of a first date?

I'm not dating anyone at the moment, but *if* I'm interested in someone in the future, I thought this might be helpful!

PS: For the ladies, with or without makeup, you're beautiful no matter what :)

Most women overdo makeup. The ones that use a slight amount of it look the best in my opinion. It’s same way how a man might war cologne. Women say a feint hint of it is great but too much is a turn off. But just as long as he smells fresh and good that is good enough, right?

Anyway from my experience if a woman doesn’t dress well and/or wear any makeup at all that makes me think she doesn’t give a shit if I’m attracted to her or not. That’s a very bad sign. It has freeloader/friéndzone written all over it. Especially if we haven’t made out or done anything sexual yet. It’s insulting and I’ve had it happen once or twice before.

BUT I went once went out on a date with a very cute tomboy one time who just wore a tshirt and jeans. It was unnerving for a moment but I could tell from her body language she liked me. We did make out later.

Anyway whether you wear makeup or not is not what matters. What matters is if you are actually interested in the guy to begin with. Just don’t accept dates from guys you plan to friéndzone just because you like the attention and/or worse a free meal. Too many women to do that bs and it’s very wrong.

Some women are beautiful without makeup or wih minimal makeup. Some women have some philosophical objections to makeup. I would never expect a woman to do something which - to her - is objectionable. However, do look at a woman on a first date to determine whether she has made an effort to present herself favorably, or whether she made a minimal effort in that regard. To me, seeing that she has made an effort indicates that she is a person who wants to please her partner (like me) and that means we are more likely to be compatible.

The answer in one word is: YES! Who doesn’t when they are 20? And yes, I’m aware that guys, especially guys two or three generations older than me will say that women look beautiful w/o makeup, but we are competing with women who WILL go all out to look her best for that guy, especially for a first date! So yes I do my hair and I wear makeup for a first date, that doesn't mean I try to look like an ‘80s supermodel on first (or any) dates! Once I’ve done my hair, I can still take a minimalist approach to my makeup. I think minimalist makeup is how l do look my best. I just go with my “best” girl next door, and not my best “clubbing w/ friends” look. I do moderate my makeup, but I also do want to look my best for him.

I sticked to mascara and lip balm because those were simple dates and did not require much makeup, and I start breaking out the very next day if I use foundation, blush or highlighter, so I keep it minimal.

Everyone will tell you that they like and prefer no makeup and how amazing a woman with no makeup is but in reality still prefer when a woman has a bit of makeup on.

Men are also not very good at being able to tell how much makeup you're actually wearing. If you use natural tones and blend the makeup well enough to have natural texture they will think you have no makeup on when you actually do.

I personally think you should dress as how you would normally dress for any nice dinner. It's a good way to show up as your "normal" self. I don't wear any makeup on a daily basis so for a dinner date I do wear a little bit of makeup and it hasn't caused any harm lol.

Not only do I have no problem with that, I prefer it. I do like her to look feminine, so a dress or skirt is nice if the weather allows it, but I don't need her to be all made up for prom. I'd rather get to know the real person.

It might be different in specific contexts - if we're going to a more fancy event for some reason, though I rarely do that anyway. But most of my dates have been about doing something fun, but otherwise relaxing and talking a lot. Makeup is not necessary for that.

It depends on what we plan to do on the date.

I don't like heavy makeup. I want her to look fresh and glowing but not fake. I don't like tarantula eye lashes, thick eye liner, mascara or obvious eye shadow. I even prefer natural-colored lipstick over bright or gaudy colors.

I'm not a fan of the Bohemian look. I think women usually look better with a bit of makeup. It shows that they put in effort to look beautiful for the date.

But, again, it depends. If our first date is some outdoor activity, makeup is unnecessary. If we're going someplace nice, like a restaurant, I'm interested in her hair style, nails, makeup and clothing choices. It shows that she can be a girly girl. I like the lady-gentleman game.

Most guys, our job is to set up the date, plan it, pay for it, and try to show you as best a time as we can. The least you could do is dress up a bit, and try to look as nice as possible. Maybe that's not makeup, but you should be trying to make yourself as attractive as you can for a first date.

From my experience, the way a woman dresses when you first meet her only gets worse as time goes on. They stop caring about "looking hot" and don't put much effort into looking good for their partner. So if she doesn't give a shit when she first meets you, it's only gonna get worse from there. I think minimum makeup shows you at least cared enough to try.

You know, I'd actually prefer her not to wear makeup so I can see how attractive she really is. Because I'm gonna be honest, make up is a common form of manipulation women use on guys because they KNOW we fall in love with our eyes, we fall in love with what we see. I am old school. I will try to say this in a way that is not too vulgar. I am also in my mid 60s now and don't do a lot of dating. I don't really care about makeup. What I don't like is when she has dark, missing, or rotten teeth, tats all over her body, has not taken a bath that day, is in that time of the month, and has not taken care of her feminine odors. A. Many times, the situation will dictate a certain "expected" level of make-up.

B. Some gals have a better "natural" look than others. Case in point: our older daughter has a very nice "natural" look: just a dab of powder and she's good to go. Our younger daughter has some acne, etc. which can use a bit of help make-up-wise.

Given these two realities, it's a toss-up about make-up on darn near any date. I would think that a first date- however- is going to be more casual. Maybe mini-golf or a disc-golf outing, a group date, a sporting event, lawn concert, etc. where a natural look is more the expected norm. A first date would seldom be a formal ball where a more flawless look would be expected.

Personally..., I like them dolled up. I prefer a woman who puts effort in accentuating her features over the plain Jane types. So chances are if we're going out on a date I already saw you this way and liked it. For the case of going to the beach, no. You're not expected to wear a full face of makeup, but girls I've been with would at least wear mascara or a lip color. If the first date is out to dinner or something nice, absolutely. If I'm expected to be clean cut and presentable, so should she.
Also, since we're talking about it, I don't want a girl that dolls up on the first date to impress you and then never does it ever again, setting you up for unrealistic expectations.

I went all out for the dates I went on, in the past. Wore all my best clothing, put gel in my hair, and wore nice cologne. I'd expect the same for my date.

It's only recently that I've seen people look like utter slobs on their dates. One would be dressed nice, and the other didn't put any effort at all. It would be a "no second date" situation if that happened to me.
