Does he just want to be friends?

Ok so I met this guy in one of my classes and slowly began talking to him more and more. For the last couple months we’ve been talking regularly at night for a few hours at a time, even though we no longer have that class. I really like him but he is sending very mixed signals. In the past he has mentioned a girl he likes and asked my advice but recently he stopped talking about her. The other day he told me that he had given up on taking charge in relationships and was waiting for the girl to ask him out first. He’s mentioned this a few times before, saying that girls should ask because guys are clueless. I feel like I am being very obvious with my intentions, but I don’t want to throw myself at him and ruin the friendship if he doesn’t like me. Do guys talk this much to girls they are just friends with? Is he just stringing me along, knowing I like him? Or could he be possibly be hinting at something?

Well, he’s already told you that he doesn’t want to make the first move, so if you’re being obvious with your intentions in hopes of him changing his mind then you’re probably wasting your time. No matter what we say, nothing will take away from the fact that making a move would be a gamble. I guess it’s just a matter of deciding if it’s worth the risk.

I talk regularly with girls I am just friends with, but him telling you that girls should ask first is probably a hint that he's open to you asking him out. If he's a good friend, even if he's not interested, he'll still want to be a friend even after being asked out. Have a conversation that you think there could be something between you, but if not you're happy to keep him as a friend, and see how he responds.
