It is easier to get a job if you already have a job.
Once you have one, even if he isn't planning to retire from it, at least he has income coming in while he searches for a better job or one that he likes better.
In this economy with the labor shortages there is just no excuse why he can't find a job. Once his stuff is gone then what will he do to help out?
