Alpha and beta are the first and SECOND. . . LETTERS (not words) of the Greek alphabet.

I understand that some people apply those letters as labels to designate men who represent the ideal of a manly man vs. those who are followers of such men. In general, I think the alpha label is self-applied by boys who lack confidence in their own masculinity and are over-compensating.
