1 yThere's a new book out I heard about on NPR called The Myth of Genius, or some such title.
It found that those found to be early geniuses didn't particularly do well in some \\followups. Some very bright people who were passed over as being ripe for Nobels GOT Nobels and some who everyone THOUGHT would be Nobel Laureates did NOT.
Some geniuses lead ordinary lives as postal clerks. There also has to be drive and opportunity. A lot of issues have to fall into place for someone with extraordinary brainpower to also live an extraordinary life.12 Reply- 1 y
What book is this? It sounds intriguing

Look up recent interviews on National Public Radio about the Myth of Genius. Woman wrote it. I heard it this week, probably three or so days ago.

But only a small percentage of people who do that win big. That's why smarter people often are in well paid jobs but not billionaires. It depends though there's exceptions for everything. I think smart people who don't fulfill their potential just stand out more because people have high expectations for them. They see what they could achieve if they put it all together. Also dumb people who overachieve stand out. But all the dumb people who never get anywhere nobody looks at them because nobody expected them to do great things. So I'd say intelligent people do better in general but there are a lot of challenges that come with intelligence that people who don't think as much don't have. The cieling is higher for an intelligent person but to get there it takes a lot of time and work.

In general the top 1% of earners are less intelligent than the top 5% of earners. That said the top 25% are noticably higher IQ than the average or lower income earners.
All that is to say that there is a correlation of spme significance but it is not enough to be a good method.
Now what is an accessible and good method, and shockingly easy, is to just go by who is hot and not. Attractiveness has a much higher correlation to income than IQ does.
So yes, being pretty is in fact better than being smart - at least statistically.00 Reply

The really high IQ people are often very good at one niche thing but often struggle with normal, common things and often have trouble relating to things outside their specialty.
Career success relies upon a decent amount of generalized knowledge and interaction with lots of average people.00 Reply- 2.1K opinions shared on Dating topic.
1 yHigh IQ doesn't have an incredibly strong correlation to intelligence.
10 Reply 2.2K opinions shared on Dating topic. The correlation is good up to about an IQ of 130 but plateaus out. Quite simply there are not many above 130. Most people are between 90 and 110.
A high IQ is necessary for a lot of high paying professions. It is generally agreed an engineer needs to be 125-130. Above 120 certainly. Arguably you need that level to get you into the university courses that will qualify you to work in your field of choice and a job but you don't actually need them to practice in the field.
But it comes down to the same thing in the end.
While IQ is the best psychometric, it is not the only quality. Perspiration counts and some intelligent people can be lazy. There are a basket of qualities that are called the millionaires hook.
Business requires good decision making with incomplete knowledge. That skill might be inimical to a high IQ analytical person.
Broadly if there was one trait for you to pick on, IQ would be pretty good one to choose. At 24 though you will know what profession a potential male partner has chosen. So it is moot.
00 Reply2.2K opinions shared on Dating topic. Not really. You can be the smartest person on the planet but that might make you never want to work and realise that work is a waste of time. Oh wait that's me.
High IQ does not mean career success unless those with high IQ actually try to get it, and it's still difficult to get it.

IT IS QUITE WASTEFUL
720 opinions shared on Dating topic. Not even remotely. Generally speaking people can only communicate consistently with those whose IQ is within 2 standard deviations of their own. By IQ 130 a person becomes ineffective at dealing with ordinary people, and as it rises from there, the difficulty communicating increases due to lack of common ground.
Unsurprisingly, ability to communicate clearly both ways with the majority of people is required for success in any conventional job.
Generally speaking most rich folk are average IQ or below.00 Reply- 688 opinions shared on Dating topic.
1 yIQ is a fairly well reputed objective measure of intellect but intellect is only one tool on the Swiss Army knife of tools required for developing a career many of which are learned through experience ad- hoc. Clearly there are also many day to day situations where applied logic can't work on its own.
00 Reply 2.1K opinions shared on Dating topic. It takes high IQ combined with high EQ
And both are usually contradictory
So you need a well balanced individual
The very smart people who have no social skills often end up employed by those who do
That’s not to say successful people are not smart because they have to be smart as well it’s just a well rounded smartness not just IQ points and the ability to do math00 Reply18.4K opinions shared on Dating topic. A higher IQ generally provides a strong foundation for potentially higher-paying careers. However, it's far from a guarantee of success.

00 Reply 13.3K opinions shared on Dating topic. They are pretty strongly correlated. The drive to succeed is also important. I'm wicked smart but not driven. I'm pretty well-paid as a software developer but if I worked on getting promoted I would be paid more.

1 ySuccess really means the ability to have children.. so iq is less of a factor than work ethic and health.

It’s the ability to produce an heir. An heir comes from a successful man. Many people in the past couldn’t raise children and therefore were not viewed as successful.
I get how you many confuse success with the word wealthy or accomplished but success is derived from the ability to have children and raise them - 1 y
I’m a student of history as much as the next guy.
But it’s beyond limiting to base modern life on the standards of old
It overlooks context
Before schools were accessible to the public an education was out of the question.
All the masses did was work procreate and send their kids to work
We’re no longer there anymore
It’s not necessary wealth itself
But success is whatever goal you’re capable of pursuing
If you’re an athlete it’s winning championships
A scientist it’s discovering new things
A doctor it’s saving lives
A musician it’s creating timeless tunes
And so on.
All of that cannot be tossed away as we judge everyone by their ability to procreate
Einstein famously said: if you judge a fish by it’s ability to climb a tree you will label it a failure - 1 y
I understand. But again your examples of accomplished professionals are people who have reached goals and won. Being successful is still about passing on a heritage to future generations.
If someone wins the lottery and gets $100 million dollars are they “successful”? No, they are wealthy. - 1 y
I see what you mean
And yes winning the lottery is not success
It does require deeper meaning and a harder earned achievement
I would say raising a family is a form of success but raising a family that wants for absolutely nothing is even better.
My parents loved me and they gave me everything they could but we also had to grow up working class
Many things I wanted I couldn’t get in the end
True success for me would be to give my children those things and never find myself having to tell them no because I can’t afford something (I would tell them no so as not to spoil them but that’s different) - 1 y
Thanks for understanding. And as you said, you want to do better in life and set up your children with a better future. That’s why you want to be even more successful than your parents were. Because it’s not just about procreating, it’s raising children in a safe and secure environment and having the resources to provide for them. That’s what a lot of girls want, a successful (potential for) man who can be her partner and help her raise the next generation.
1 yIt depends if the IQ lines up with available jobs.
