Every day we hear of homophobic abuse in the workplace, cementing the mistrust in business support for LGBT people. Recently Good Indian saw a question on GirlsAskGuys about this. I am not going to mention because it's not in Anonymous mode.

What Steps should be taken to to support LGBTQAI Community in Workplace?

Taking into consideration the opinions, my own opinion, and after reading a few articles on the internet, I decided to write this myTake to provide tips through the platform of GirlsAskGuys.

Diversity at the Work Place

Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization.

Being inclusive means more than just obeying the law, it means making clear diversity is encouraged and that differences are celebrated. Top management should clearly mention their opinion towards the LGBTQAI Community.

Build Support

LGBTQ employee resource groups are an excellent source of information and can provide contacts with other employees who may be in a similar situation. If your company does not have a LGBTQ employee resource group, you may consider starting one to raise the profile of your cause and to seek out allies.

Talk to your supervisors about what you are trying to accomplish. Make sure they understand what you are doing and why it is so important to you.

The major challenge for LGBT people in the workplace is continued harassment or discrimination. It's time to join hands and help them though we are heterosexuals. We might write our future myTakes on this topic.

I've tended to work in very, I guess you can say, people friendly and accommodating environments. People just got along no matter what your thing was from the top on down, but if someone were to ask, "were your jobs supportive of gay employees," I'd say well, only so much as to say, they didn't not support them, but said employees also weren't asking for anything nor do I think the job could have given them anything specifically because they were gay. I could say the same for black or Muslim employees... they weren't doing anything that outwardly supported these employees, but they didn't do anything that didn't.

I think that's the gist of it really. You want a workplace that focuses on the work and doesn't do anything like openly discriminate or not hire LGBTQAI persons. I'm sure there are places that are more open about support, but would you want a giant sign held up over you saying we support you and potentially being used as the token representative of whatever program the job had to support so they could say, look at us, we support all people?

I never experienced any harassment or discrimination in the workplace. in fact almost everybody I have ever worked with was very nice and pleasant to work with. there has been a couple of people who were not so pleasant but that is something that will always happen. I've worked in a kitchen with a couple of almost redneck style people, and they were the best colleagues I've ever had.

I don't think there is much hatred against lgtb people anymore. most have accepted it, and lgtb already have all the same rights as everybody, at least in the western world.

I question the logic of supporting LGBT people in the workplace.

If there is a policy against making discriminatory jokes and what not, against LGBT, then that is fine.

But one has to ask why the subject of LGBT is relevant in the workplace at all. LGB people represent <1% of the population, while transgenders represent <0.01% of the population.

In an office of 400 employees, you may have at most an average of 4 LGB people, and unlikely to have a single transgender person. But the real question is... why would of the employees know your sexual orientation unless you advertised it like an attention-seeking whore?

How does the fact that a gay guy likes to fuck other men in the ass even come up as a topic in the workplace?

When I say that I can tell a person is gay by looking/speaking to them, gay people take offense. So assuming they are correct, and that being gay has no visible characteristics, how would your peers know that a person is gay to begin with?

I am completely against this LBQWERTY movement in general and if i where in a company i would make sure NOT to put such an interest group in place because it will have a negative outcome. The proffesional workplace is not a space for people's sexuality, its a place where you work with each other on a whole other level and if employee's want to share these things with each other that is entirely fine but my business would have nothing to do with it.

I mean think about it from a logical view, i work in a department full of IT people. I have absolutely no idea who are straight, who are gay and who are bisexual. There simply is no way of knowing and that is a GOOD thing. It shows everyone how little it truly matters and how despite any potential political view or sexuality we might have are EQUAL in an EQUAL workplace where nobody knows because literally nobody gives a crap about your sexuality they care about your personality and how you do your job.

Now if the company i work at would start advocating for minority interest groups it would go down hill to the point i could even consider leaving the company over it. Because first of all you are putting a spotlight on people's labels, LOOK EVERYONE THEY ARE GAY! LOOK AT HOW GAY THEY ARE! YOU SHOULD RESPECT THAT! and thats not a good thing. Second of all its a huge disservice to everyone else at the company because they have no interest group themselves. So then your going to end up with all kinds of unnatural political movements and that will just have a very bad impact on the company. Look at Google, Facebook and Apple who all went to hell over this firing rational people who where good at there job because they said the wrong totally sane thing such as the horrifying claim that perhaps women and men have differences (The shock!).

So i honestly don't care about your sexuality i will threat you like a normal person. So stop trying to make yourself a victim, stop using your sexuality as an identity because its never going to work in your favor aside from the dating aspect where it can help you find people with similar preferences.

i don't support LGTB any more than i support boyscouts opening up to girls. i also don't support t obamacare mandate. trying to compel people to actively support something is slavery. who's supporting MY lifestyle? where are MY special favors and recognition? NO YOU DON'T. he's there to tell the news and that's what he does. every moment spent supporting some other cause besides being profitable to the company makes me a less profitable employee. so no i don't support and don't think supporting LGBT at work should be done because it distracts from making money. if i work at a place that makes mufflers doing anything besides focusing on making mufflers isn't profitable. now if i run a LGTB dating website... that would be different because the company mission is to support LGTB.

While on the surface, it doesn't matter what a person's sexual orientation is at work, it really does matter once you start thinking about team building and morale.

By supporting LGBT people in the workplace, you're saying to them that they are welcome within the corporate culture. That's a big deal - especially if people are weary of coming out due to past complications. If you don't feel like you can truly be yourself around your team, then you aren't going to perform as well. Your motivation may also be affected.

For example, one of my project teams at work is very close-knit. We know one another's spouses, what everybody's religion is, what food/drink everybody likes, what we do for fun in our private lives, etc even though we're spread across multiple different countries and states. If one of us felt like they couldn't be themselves because they're gay or transgendered, it would hurt the cohesion of our team. And my team is very, very successful at what we do. It would be a very poor business decision to not put a small amount of money towards supporting inclusion in the workplace.

It's easy to see the affect this has on business, too. Far from exhibiting negative affects like many like to predict, the largest and most successful businesses on Earth support LGBT employees in a variety of ways. It's no coincidence that most of the companies on the Fortune 500 list have comprehensive, concrete support for its LGBT employees.

It's also a labor market issue. People love to think of business from a firm-oriented perspective, but there's a labor side of the coin as well that is equally as important in a lot of fields. Knowledge-based fields like information technology, high tech engineering and creative industries like entertainment, apparel and marketing have a lot of LGBT people in the labor pool. Now these companies aren't looking for warm bodies to fill seats - they're looking for people with a significant amount of skill and creativity. That makes it a buyer's market to a large degree. Firms that do not explicitly support LGBT employees are at a (potentially severe) competitive disadvantage to those who do. They simply won't be able to attract the best talent if they are perceived as being gay/transgender friendly.

People only want diversity of representation which is utter bullshit. You shouldn't have more LGBT people in the workplace just to satisfy a quota, that only harms business and the economy as a whole because of instead of hiring someone actually good for the job, you are forced to hire diverse people to fill a quota so that you can you are PC. That's not right at all, and should be stopped asap.

There is no hate for LGBT people. People don't care who you fuck for the most part, it's the people that say ridiculous things and try to force people to accept those things, or try claim to be about equality, but do the complete opposite. People like Feminist Frequency for example. Or Milo. Or Riley J. Dennis. They aren't hated for what they identify as, they are hated because of the stupid, racist and downright disgusting things they say, and how they invent dragons to slay and are ridiculously hypocritical and stupid.

I like your opinion on this, but Milo doesn't fit in the list because while he is gay he only uses that against those with gender arguments. He doesn't actually see a need to treat people differently based on sexual prefferences as far as i am aware.

I have to be honest, I think most gay people are very sensitive. People joke about several things in the workplace beyond gender identity and sexual preference, but you don't see everyone and their grandmother being offended by it. Really, your sexuality shouldn't come up anyway in the workplace as there's no reason for it. What reason is there to tell everyone you're gay? It's not like you should be dating in the workplace, anyway, and a lot of people don't really care to know.

I don't get the whole support group part. When do you even get time for that? At the workplace your sole focus is to do your job. Your sexuality, gender, politics, religion etc.. shouldn't even be discussed.

If there is discrimination of some sort then HR should definitely deal with that issue. But I don't think anyone including top management should have to mention their opinions on the LGBT community , the same way they shouldn't have to give their opinions on politics and religion.

You don't have to "support" any community at work. Because the company should only take the one who is the most fitted for the job, without regard to his color or sexual orientation.
And no one should know about your sexual orientation at work, unless you mention it. There is no need for special treatement. Do your job and stay, or don't and leave. While I don't agree, I can at least follow the transgender line of thought, you think you are a gender that you biologically are not. Of course not, same goes for someone who doesn’t support LGBT. Just because they don’t actively support it doesn’t mean they hate LGBT people. The only way a person could be considered homophobic is if the person is against LGBT. A person who doesn’t support LGBT could have their reasons, perhaps they have more important personal matters to attend to or perhaps they want to remain neutral. A person who doesn’t support LGBT can still respect them as human beings.
