Parents Need to be Mindful of and Involved With Their Child!

Parents Need to be Mindful of and Involved With Their Child!

It’s that time of year: back to school time. The time when all children return to the mystical building we call “school” and, hopefully, fill their minds with knowledge.

As a teacher-to-be, I thought it may be pertinent to put this message out there so that it may reach a few parents who need to hear it most...

YOU are responsible for your child’s upbringing. Even when they are on school grounds and have many adults and other students surrounding them, you must stay involved with your child and MUST discuss any behavior issues with them and discipline accordingly. It is not the teacher’s responsibility to teach your child to respect them, that is YOUR job as a parent. We can only support a student so much; when they become a disturbance in the classroom, there is litttle we can do to try to keep them in line. Ultimately, if you do not respect us, neither will your child. Then, not only will your child not learn the material they are responsible for, but few other students will either. It is imperative that you are involved and communicating with the teacher and know what is going on in the classroom.

On another note, talking to your student and helping them with any and all homework is proven scientifically to help them along in their studies. Ask your student to give you details of what they learned that day, not just about their social life (though that is important too). If they can inform you of the material, it means they retained the information. If not, then let us know! We want to make sure your child is learning what they need to to be as successful as possible in their academics. If your child is struggling and the teacher doesn’t notice because of the other 25 students, you need to be an advocate for your child and make sure they are getting the most out of their education.

YOU are your child’s advocate. You know them best and are the only one who can truly point out their full needs to the administration and teachers.

If you believe your student may have a learning disability, inform the teacher! If the teacher notices something and asks for your permission to have your child evaluated, please allow them to do their job! If your student has needs that cannot be met without a bit of extra support, it is in the best interest of the student that this is noted early on. You do not want them to feel far behind their peers forever. If you feel uncomfortable with the testing, express that you would like to know more about the specific tests and be present during any and all testing.

Overall, just inform us of your concerns! We cannot help you if we do not know what you are hesitant about.

Most importantly: thank you. Thank you for caring for and being there for your child through it all.
