What went wrong?

So I applied for a job in March, got selected in the interviews, moved on to the next stages and eventually successfully completed the final interview. After the final interview, I was called in to have coffee with other employees, by which time I was also told by the recruiter that I will shortly be given my contract to commence the job - hence I declined other job opportunities.
I was waiting for my contract, but heard nothing back from them. I then followed up asking when the contract will be given, and still nothing. I then received a mere phone call saying I was not selected. I tried asking what happened, but now they're denying even mentioning a contract and twisting stories around! I am so confused, what went wrong?

(I'm aware of people being rejected in interviews, but this is not that. This is me being straight up lied to)

The other coworkers didn't like you it seems. Werr you conversational during coffee. That job seems odd. Everything happens for a reason

The other co-workers and I had a very friendly chat, they said they really liked me. Besides, that was not an interview or anything, it was just a casual chat over coffee 'after' being told that a contract will be given to me shortly.
