I am an in home nurse who cares for the elderly. The patient has an adult daughter in the home who has a dog. There is also a male relative who comes over and stays the night. Yesterday I witnessed that male relative in the backyard punching and kicking the dog and the dogs ribs are showing. I called and told my job about this. They are going to come and do a supervisor visit. Although, I enjoy my elderly patient I no longer want to work at this home due to what I've seen. It really affected my spirit. People who abuse animals are sociopaths and are capable of more. Should I leave this client's home? I'm scared now.
I wouldn't work there anymore. Then once you leave call animal care and control so that they won't suspect it's you

The way it happened I heard him say come on let's go for a walk. He forgot to close the backyard door so it was slightly cracked. I went to wash my hands then seen him kick and punch the dog. He doesn't know I seen him. I immediately told my job after work. He pretends to walk her but now I know he abuses her

So no it wasn't a bug scene to where it was out in the open. He's secretly doing this. i suspected but as of yesterday that was the proof
Witnessed animal abuse in my patient home. What else would you do?
I would call animal care and control. Pretend you're a neighbor who witnessed from their home the dog being abused in the backyard of a neighbors home for weeks now. That way you're off the hook and wait a few days after your shift so that you're not suspected. These is a tell tell sign of serial killers they torture animals for fun. Usually starts in childhood.

This is not the exact same thing, but I worked in a similar situation, a patient vandalized my car. I was told that I was not allowed to press charges. I quit and pressed charges, it was the only way I could recoup the thousands of dollars of damage she did.
Your job is not worth that animals life, leave and report it.
Animal cruelty is despicable and should not be tolerated at all, I couldn't stay in this environment and see this happen.
If I were you I would leave this job and report the individual to the relevant authorities as soon as possible, the animal could be in real danger of being seriously hurt.

Thanks, I just found out about it this week the daughters boyfriend is hurting the dog. If I would've known this in the beginning I would've never taken this client as an assignment. Either way I'm informing my job that I can no longer work in that home and reporting the animal abuse to animal care and control. I'm going to let animal care and control know ," don't let the appearance of the home fool you. If you're not going to remove the dog when you go out there then don't bother going out because all that's going to do is make the guy angrier until he really abuses the dog." I was fooled by the nice home. I figured beautiful home so the dog has a good place to stay. But no not at all what I had imagined. I'm highly disappointed
I would call ASPCA and the police immediately, don't wait to quit your job. There are other patients and jobs, it's not worth money to be complicit in animal abuse and the animal is in danger of harm and also could be killed. It is important to act quickly and if you want to give me the information such as address, the guy's name, or other details, I will report it.

I would give the address only issue is the patient lives there so that would be a hippa violation. Thank you, your comment makes me feel so much better about getting out of this case. As a nurse I agree there are so many jobs in the medical field. I dont know the guys real name. I was going to do like a commenter told me and just pretend I'm a neighbor who saw it from their yard
Honestly as hard as it is I would stay for the client. My job is to the client and that is my priority. Would it break my soul if I witnessed an animal being abused, absolutely. And I would also wonder if that abuse is directed at my client in any way. I wouldn’t be super concerned about seeing ribs though; while it could be a sign of abuse it could also just be an animal going through the lanky awkward teenage stage or just a fit animal. Unless every rib, spine and hips are visible I wouldn’t include that as a factor of abuse. You could also make an anonymous complaint to your local animal control, SPCA or bylaw.

So if he's doing this to a dog who else could he be doing this too? Also , there are only two nurses in the home. I'm the dog lover so they would no I called animal care and control. So it's best I get out and listening to a dog get abused as I'm caring for a patient is not an ideal environment. 1 red flag leads to another.
His state of mind is the issue. Who is his misplaced anger going to be towards next? What if he kills the dog while I'm in the home? I prefer not to work in a toxic environment. I deserve much better.
I’m not saying you have to stay. I said what I would do in that situation. Because my job is to the client that has hired me to help assist with their care. As I said if he did that to the dog what would he do to the client and I’m not about to step back and let something happen to my client. If you choose to step back that’s entirely your decision, I just said what I would do
@Kori1236 you should not see any rib on a dog. If you can see them the dog is under weight and that dog is not being fed properly. I've had animals all my life. I know how a dog should look when it's healthy.
It’s entirely dependent on the breed of dog. The world is too used to seeing obese animals, calling them chonky or big boned when in reality it’s obese. Now if you have a dog that is within its breed standard weight range it’s healthy but if your breeds standard weight is max 70lbs and your dog is 100lbs there’s an issue. So again seeing ribs isn’t an indicator seeing ribs, spine and hip bones is an indicator.
No dogs ribs should be showing. Especially in a pit bull. And I've witnessed that dog being starved for 8 hrs! Mt shift 2 days in a row in a cage with no bedding.
My dog goes 8-10 hours between meals. Nothing wrong with kenneling and some dogs cannot have bedding as they eat it. And yes pitbulls are meant to be lean dogs it’s entirely common to see the back one to two ribs of a well maintained pitbull. Now if you can see all of them yes there is an issue.
Again it is breed dependant. Look at greyhounds, whippets, Salukis, in a fit animal at the correct weight you can indeed see at least 2 ribs. I’ve seen super fit sight hounds that have 4 ribs visible. Now if you overfeed them and make them obese you will not see their ribs. My friends golden is 10 months old and going through the puppy uglies she’s lanky as all hell and you can see her ribs despite her weighing more than she should. So again ribs alone unless every one is visible is not an indicator of
@Kori1236 as a vet nurse myself I will say you are absolutely incorrect. A dog's ribs should be palatable but not visible protruding. Please stop giving out misleading information. A healthy dog's ribs would not be visibly protruding. Has nothing to do with breeds. I have a greyhound and a great dane who are both thin but because they're at a healthy weight their ribs are not visibly showing.
@uptowngirl88 thank you for chiming in. It's great to get the opinion from someone that works with animals. I have had all types of dogs my whole life and they were never obese or under weight. We never saw their ribs. Sounds like maybe she isn't feeding her dogs enough.
@uptowngirl88 I didn’t say visibly protruding I said they should be visible. I’m guess you’ve mostly seen obese or pet weight animals as opposed to working and sport dogs who’s ribs are absolutely visible not protruding; especially when they’re breathing heavily. With my dog you can feel his ribs and when he breathes heavily after competing in a sport you can see his back two ribs.
As for the feeding dogs enough comment made by @sparkie460 my dogs eat more and better than I do. They’re just sport dogs so their conditions are at peak. They’re not pet weight and they’re not obese (although both are formerly obese)
@Kori1236 a either way a dog's ribs should not be visible but palpable. If a dog's ribs are visible they are emaciated. A dog at its ideal weight ribs would not be showing. I see dog's of all backgrounds. Do you hold a degree in animal/ veterinary science?
I do not, my dad however did, and my brother does. They are the ones I went to and still go to. Hence where I got all my information. Plus the numerous foster and rescues I’ve worked with over the years. I’m fully aware of the scale to follow as I do it with my own.
@uptowngirl88 like I said I've had dogs and cats all my life. We take them to the vet regularly and they always say we take great care of our fur babies. The vet always says they are perfect weight. Their ribs are not visible but you can feel each one.
I looked at the chart. My statement was correct as uptowngirl88 agreed. You shouldn't be able to see the ribs but you can feel them. This is how I've always raised my animals
Cool not my job to make you believe me or not. Point is that’s where I got my information. On top of being part of the sporting dog communities. But I maintain ribs visible isn’t the only indication of abuse. The beating the dog is the main focus for abuse
Don't care much about dogs so shrugs on that front, however it does speak to their characters as people so I would report them for that reason or make an attack on them myself. If it was a cat, oh I would just kill them along with take the cat for myself. Goodie are cats.
Personally I would kick the guys ass for abusing the dog but I know that isn't an option for you. Record the pos abusing the dog, call the police and animal control. Show them the video and get him arrested. I would act fast before he ends up killing the dog

Do I need a video because if he catches me recording him... a person her abuses an animal like that is not mentally stable. I'm sure this guy has been in trouble with the law before. I can tell by the way he carries himself. I found out he's the daughters boyfriend. He lives with the daughters the issue is unfortunately the daughter lives in an upscale neighborhood and the house is well kept. Based on that I just
Don't want them to assume everything is fine. because honestly I think he knows I'm onto him because he has caught me watching the dogs bloody language and him. He looked embarrassed and now he closes the door when he takes the dog out. And the daughter has 2 cameras. One at the front door and the other where I care for her mom. So if she sees me recording in her house it's another mess
The guy might be on probation. If he's caught committing violence while on probation he can do many years behind bars. When you record him don't make it look obvious. Just act like you're doing something on your phone. If there's a window facing the back yard put your phone in the window while recording and walk away for a couple minutes.
That's the problem hearsay part but I have an actual picture of the guy. I did some Facebook searching. I like the case I work at as far as the patient and her daughter but he's the problem. It's really pissing me off because I feel like leaving the case which will mess up my income. I hope to God someone shoots and kills him
I have the same feelings. My friend who is well prophet/psychic whatever you call it says he will be gone before Christmas and that the dog is going to get taken away by a woman. We shall see if it really happens.
In the UK you would contact the rspca. I don't know where you're from but you've probably got a similar animal welfare organisation.

We have animal care and control but the issue is if the dog doesn't get adopted by a certain time they euthanize.. maybe humane society could help they're no kill

Thank you, I'm trying to wait a couple days to where it's not obvious it's me. my only concern is I've seen people make reports yet animal care and control says ," they don't look physically injured and they're well fed so. " I just don't want to end up in that position to where he then gets more angry with the dog and hurts her. I'm going to find a way to get that man kicked out the house. His girlfriend doesn't know he's doing this or she's scared of him. I don't know
I can understand. I saw a guy beating and kicking a dachshund at a park and called the police. They certainly didn't react as fast as I wanted them to. It's very distressing to see.

Unfortunately, people who are tasked to do something about violence don't see violence as the same when done on themselves, or others (people or "animals")...
There is also the thing that anyone could report such a thing out of spite coming from any kind of (mean, unfrair) reason, and it would be cruel in that case to take the dog from the "owners". So it's not easy for animal care to do the right thing.
On the other hand, if you managed to have video proof... but that will take far more than a week, and you may never get the chance. Also, if you are "caught trying to catch him", he will never risk blowing off his steam on the dog when you can see that, and your chances to get proof will be null thereon.
@oh_k789 right, I want them to just remove the dog the first time they go out there because if they don't. The man that's abusing the dog is going to get pissed he was reported then abuse the dog more.
Yeah, unfortunately there is a lot of bad people out there who do bad stuff. It can be demoralizing at times, but I also know many amazing people out there and not to get hung up on small things since nobody is perfect.
I've called on people before and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. They'll say oh the dog looks good it's a clean home. I just don't want that to help to where he gets angrier and hurts the dog. I'm going to figure out something.
