Why would an employer ask you to resign rather than terminate the contract himself?

When I started this job there was a 2 month trial period in which termination from both ends was free and no accountability held. However, I’m now 4 months into this job and 2 of the people in the top were complaining about my performance out of the blue (they have never raised these concerns before) and asking me to quit. I made it clear I wanted to stay but he was pretty determined it was a bad idea. Wtf? Then he was like: I believe it will be bad on both ends and he will try to come up with a plan for me but if it doesn’t work we will have to separate.

I asked about this to admins and she said he probably doesn’t have the balls to terminate the contract himself hence why he’s trying to pressure me to resign. Because it is an international firm, he has to provide a Legitimate reason to the global office and hence why he’s hesitant to do it himself.

he also said that he wants to have another meeting about this. Is he just using these tactics to get me to quit?
