If I always hated school, why do have sudden interest in reading?

There was nothing wrong with me academically. I just hated their education system and being forced to memorize and study worthless materials. I passed my classes with B's and C's and did what was needed. I was never one of those overachievers. This used to disappoint several of my teachers. I was once told ''But why? You got more potencial, you're really an A student, you could've been the Valedictorian''. I could have but didn't feel like it.

My reaction was exactly like Timon (''Books are for mooks''... his famous catchphase) from the Lion King. I used to think all that was for idiots.

This might come as a surprise but I had A's on every single math tests but my grade would end up being a B for the simply reason of sometimes not turning in my math homeworks. Why? Because I didn't feel like it. I felt that was idiotic. I already knew it all.

Nowadays in my mid 20's, I find myself navigating online or on bookstores (at my own pace) about history information, horror books, etc. Why do I have sudden interest now but never at school?

Perhaps the love for reading was always there but you didn’t enjoy the forcing of material and could be the right teacher wasn’t available to bring these things out of you.


I personally enjoy learning about history, physics, theoretical physics and yet I did mediocre in these subjects in school but I love it when there’s a good documentary/ podcast or article about them.

That's pretty much how my school years were. I always felt like the teachers were just focusing on their students getting good grades and memorizing materials for the sake of school. They never went deeper into my likes, my skills, talents, what am really good at nor motivated me to use all my potential.

One of the stupidest thing to do at school was to memorize the steps towards dissecting a frog or too much focus on one single reading material for weeks instead of going further into others.

So true, similar experience except one teacher tried his best to harness that quest for knowledge beyond the school system and let it take me wherever it goes

Well reading and school are two completely different things. I also hated school and didn’t do any work and I love reading. Reading is a fun way to pass the time, lose yourself in a storyline and find out information. You can also do it in the comfort of your own home, or out in public. School however is a place full of toxic brats being taught math and spelling 😆

Reading for leisure/hobby is much different from studying for exam!
Firstly you get to choose what to read and you are not forced to memorize it and write exam lol

Yes indeed. I find myself learning more in that manner and actually enjoying it. I always felt that none of my teachers care about me as a person nor my actually potential, what I like. They were all just focus on just the grades. You end up feeling like a robot that just read and study for the grades but nothing beyond that.
