I don't understand what the fascination is with the ethnic diversity among the nominees. No, I think the award should go to the person who has worked hard for it and deserves it, not just distribute the awards between people so it looks "politically correct".

nwa and their actors should've been nominated, maybe will smith from concussion. it's not about being politically correct. they were literally great movies, regardless of the fact that they had black casting.

@Cerenityy i love matt damon, but the martian was overrated as fuck. if he got a nomination, then the dudes from nwa should've gotten a bid. but then again, i bet you're 1 of the people who think johnny depp is still a good actor.

I just noticed u asked an opinion question then gave facts that only supported your belief

I'm against racism but no I don't think the Oscars are "too white". I mean let's face it they're fucking stupid in every other regard, but there weren't a lot of minorities this year in film making. I mean some argue Will Smith Concussion but judging from the trailer even I, a movie nerd, didn't wanna see that.

Is saying the NBA is too black, could I get angry at them for that?

@kaylaS91 And yet Eminem and other white basketball players I've seen but don't know the names of xD r also rappers

It's a measure of talent not race. It's not that other races don't have talent it's just they didn't choose the right scripts

ugh I know. Eminem is great but, common psychological phenomenon. Because him begin talented at rapping AND white, which conflicts with the stereotype most people hold dear to their heart, he becomes the 'exception' to the rule.

That's a good point. If 90% of actors in A-list or high-end movies were black yet none got nominated, that'd be a bigger issue. With POC being a minority in terms of being cast in leading/potential roles though, perhaps that should be viewed as the root of the problem versus who ends up winning.

@kaylaS91 Exactly. Actually, it might go even deeper than that. Some scripts calls for specifically white and black characters. It might have to go to the writing.

lol truetrue. I guess the times have called for writers to actually specifically state what race their characters are. Which brings to mind the whole Hermoine debacle after her character was played by an AA woman in a play Resulting in an outcry that Hermoine is white, yet J. K. Rowling had never specifically stated a race for her, technically making both fair game.. :/

@kaylaS91 In that case it doesn't really matter. I mean if you think about it I can only remember ONE black character from the Harry Potter movies. And it was that one dude from the ministry. And it never even said if he was black or not, but they made him black anyways. That was kinda racist

hahaahha token black guy I guess. I think it's fine if the majority of people in the HP franchise were white. I mean, for god's sake, it's set in England. Or I guess Hogwarts or the wizarding world, but might as well assume England. Which has a large majority of white people as part of it's demographics...

And clearly the NFL and NBA are racist. Blacks are 13% of the population but majority in those leagues. So either its racism, or races are talented in different areas. Which is it?

doesn't have to be one or the other. Blacks don't play baseball in as high as numbers as whites. but they could. Culturally they are just into different sports
Talent has nothing to do with membership to the academy, its a nomination process.
The academy is who selects winners for the OSCARS

Have you seen Will Smith's interview it goes beyond the Oscars. Its the fact that there is no diversity in Hollywood, yet there are many minority actors. There are many white actors who play roles meant for minorities. Its white supremacy that minorities and whites are trying to end

I think some minorities (and really pc whites) need to get over themselves. The fact that they are angry about the race of the people on the TV is pretty sad really. They look at the race of the people on TV rather then who that person is, thats pretty sad how shallow they are when it comes to judging others.

This is not an issue about race...

This is an issue of the differences between certain actors and actresses.

Let's look at all of them as humans and defind them as such... Suddenly it's not racist. Why? Because you ate defining someone based on their skin color which is racist.

Saying someone needs something for their skin instead of their performance is racist.

The people who weren't nominated didn't deserve to be nominated. Simple.

Lol How many times will this be brought up? It's always been that way. Yes, the "judges" are using their subjective thought to pick the best Actors to win, but it's nothing new that the majority of them have been white.

I don't think it's "too white", but I don't think credit is being given where it's due.

Perhaps the Oscars needs a token a awards for black Americans to be happy.
What percentage of the film industry are Jewish?
Also should the NBA not be forced to diversify due to its small number of white players. I mean last years player of the year awards were a complete black out.

Why do people continue to use that asinine comparison? The NBA chooses people based off of talent and millions of dollars will go down the drain if the scouting isn't taken seriously.

Whereas in the Oscars someone could simply make a compelling argument for an actor to win an award.

      There is no comparison.

I think the African American community should have their own Awards show, oh wait they do. So what you are saying is have an awards show for minorities only? Isn't that discrimination and more segregation? hmmm ok yes and then when the whites become the minority, then what?

I actually use some of my time to enjoy life. That being said if I have bad things on my mind I focus on actual issues and not some pseudo-fair award show which no one in their right mind should care about anyway. Like how does it matter if someone has an oscar or not? Does that magically make him/her a better person? Does it make a better movie?

No. It's a complete waste. And complaining about it not being diverse enough is even more of a waste.

Independent of that it still doesn't say anything about the "initial problem" - which is a first world problem nonetheless. So how exactly is it relevant as a problem? How is it a big deal?

Just because we are discussing it doesn't mean we think its a huge deal that takes precedence over other matters.

" Just because we are discussing it doesn't mean we think its a huge deal that takes precedence over other matters. "

      I already explained to you.

The whole concept of "first world problems" is stupid.
If I complain that my bath water is too cold, I'm complaining about a legitimate problem, but we can all agree dying of starvation is a more serious matter. Nonetheless, that doesn't make my problem disappear.

Someone can complain about being partially blind, and we will all agree that's a horrible thing to deal with, but not as bad as being completely paralyzed. Does that make being partially blind easier?

No matter what your problem is, there are worse ones. A family in china can complain about their 3 yr old daughter being kidnapped (real problem there) but we can agree that her being brutally murdered is worse.

You are always free to live within of africa with true black culture, maybe you could go for Nigéria, you could have a industry only with people of skin color while still having acess to some technology, cience, and things invented or developed by whites like the computer, the language, the clothes and many things made by white people used by blacks who don't want to live within of africa because they want to have these things made, developed or invented by white people.

No one said that it did. You stated that if someone went to a tennis club and saw white people, would it be called racist or would minorities just not be interested in tennis?

As shown, there are still people who will purposefully segregate for no rational reason. To simply think that no black people want to show up to the prom would be pretty far-fetched and illogical (just like thinking that no minority would be interested in tennis or the club). But to deem it as automatically racist would be foolish as well.

My point is that it COULD be and for people to think outside of their narrow-minded box.

The award goes to best actor " male or female " "black or white" the fact that any given "race" gets nominated more than others is purely coincidence and only indicative of the best performance at the time each is chosen. Contrary to what the racebaters want you to believe.

not sure about how the nominees get nominated, but it would make sense white people gravitate towards white actors more/ "white films". Plus there are a lot more white actors in films. I can't remember the last time I saw a Minority star in a movie with white co-stars.

Just like how Chinese movie awards almost never have minorities get awards. However the only difference is , China is not 46 something percent minority population.

There are definitely some Caucasians who do that (also applicable to other races), but I'd say that is more of the older generation who lived through the segregation era. Those born in the 90's and later tend to be more open. There is a higher percentage of white actors which explains why the majority of the nominations were white, but "Creed" and "Compton" were contenders without a doubt.

Technically yes, because there aren't a lot of opportunities for POC. If there were more opportunities, then it would be a fair chance. If the actor/actress, director, etc. did award worthy work, it shouldn't matter what their skin color or gender is; it should be about the work.

Most of the writers, directors, actors, and producers in Hollywood are white. Given this, it's no surprise that most awards go to white people. It's simply a matter of probability.

The whining over the lack of minorities is really pathetic. The Academy Awards are about merit, not affirmative action. There is no requirement to vote for someone based on race. Besides, anyone who expects me to feel sorry that no-talent millionaires like Will Smith aren't getting awards is delusional.

There should be token awards for best black actor/actress in a movie just to keep them happy lol

I don't think the problem is the Oscars, so much as hollywood/ American media. Minority actors and actresses often get pushed into very specific roles in specific movies.

Overall, while the Oscars themselves are not to blame, I think it is still good to bring these things up in any context. And they made the right move adding more films, almost like a little affirmative action to get the ball rolling to hopefully someday expose more people to minority actors and get them on par with white.

Diversifying the Academy makes sense (how about some Hispsnics, Asians, Indians, etc too, right?). Ths times they are a changing...

But feeling pressured to overrepresent black awardees (vs. the overall is population) to avoid a backlash is ridiculous.
