Shape of Water (2017)
I ended up seeing this film January 27th, 2018. I already expected it to be somewhat strange given the premise, Elisa, a mute woman living in Baltimore in 1962. She is misunderstood and lonely due to her condition. She meets a creature similar to that of the universal monster “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” and develops a unique bond that eventually goes sexual. I did not expect it to be a cold war spy story in addition to the paranormal romance. I recommend this movie as a unique take on the perspective of finding love and somewhere to belong. An important caveat, this film contains full frontal nudity and heavy violence along with extreme cruelty, strong language, and sexual themes (obviously).
Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017)
I saw the previews and really wanted to see it in theaters but it I didn’t have the funds at the time. My father and I watched it together last month when it came to pay per view. After a string of events, the world’s best protection agent (Ryan Reynolds) is asked by his ex, an agent of Interpol to protect one of the world’s best guns for hire and his mortal enemy (Samuel L Jackson). During their journey from England to Hague to take the hitman to testify against an Eastern European dictator on crimes against humanity, they encounter high-speed car chases, outlandish boat escapades and over the top action scenes. I recommend this film for those seeking a great action comedy.
How to talk to Girls at Parties (2017)
I stumbled upon this film by accident and was pleasantly surprised. It is about a couple of British 1970s teen-aged boys, Enn (Alex Sharp) and Vic, who go to a party held by local punk Queen Boadicea(Nicole Kidman) to meet girls, only to find that the girls are very different from the boys' expectations. Enn crashes the fun and discovers every horny boy's dream; gorgeous foreign exchange students. When he meets the enigmatic Zan (Ellie Fanning), its lust at first sight, but these girls have come a lot further than America. They are, in fact, aliens from another galaxy, sent to Earth to prepare for a mysterious rite of passage. When the dark secret behind the rite is revealed, our galaxy-crossed lover Enn must turn to Boadicea and her punk followers for help in order to save the alien he loves from certain death. The punks take on the aliens on the streets of London, and neither Enn nor Zan's universe will ever be the same again. It did poorly at the Cannes Film Festival but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out.
