There's no question that reading books increases the vocabulary of young children and adults. Being exposed to words, especially at an early age, can lead to higher test scores in class and a higher intelligence level in adults. Reading is a way for the brain to “work out.” By doing this “work out”, studies have shown that it can lead to better memory and overall brain function. As we age, our memory starts to decline; reading can slow this process down. One thing that books do very well is illustrate the protagonist's emotions to the audience. This allows us to feel for the protagonist or put ourselves in their shoes, and it give us a better understanding of how others feel. By learning the character's emotions from book to book, we learn more about their traits and more about people in general. We become more empathetic this way.

Reading is also a great stress reliever. It is important for each individual to find and perform an activity that they enjoy in order to reduce stress, as it is great for your brain and a good way to relax. Reading before bed will not only reduce stress, but also allow us to sleep easier which is great for the body and mind!
