Hi y’all, first MyTake here. Pretty self-explanatory. I’m going to be sharing the music I have had on repeat lately. I believe I have excellent taste. 👅 Can you share in the comments if you’ve ever heard of these musicians and whether you can back me up in enjoying this music?
1. Sade
Genre: jazz, soul, r&b, 80s/90s
Favorite/most played three songs: “Is It a Crime”, “Smooth Operator”, “Nothing Can Come Between Us”
Quotable lyric: “My love is wider, wider than Victoria Lake/My love is taller, taller than the Empire State/It dives, it jumps, and it ripples like the deepest ocean” (from “Is It a Crime”)
Why you should listen: Sade is composed of bold, emotive jazz-style instrumentals accompanied by the “smooth” voice of a female vocalist, the namesake of the group. If you are in need of an upbeat, soulful, drive home, this is your band.
2. Hozier
Genre: modern alternative, soul
Favorite/most played three songs from the new album: “All Things End”, “Francesca”, “First Light”
Quotable lyric: “The sky set to burst/The gold and the rust/The color erupts/You filling my cup” (from “First Light”)
Why you should listen: It may have started with “Take Me to Church”, but Hozier’s music remains relevant with ethereal wide-ranging vocals, soulful inspirations, and romantic lyricism that dub him the nickname “forest daddy”. 😏
3. Marvin Gaye
Genre: Motown, soul, 70’s
Favorite three songs: “What’s Going On”, “Mercy Mercy Me”, “Inner City Blues”
Quotable lyric: “Where did all the blue skies go?” (From “Mercy Mercy Me”)
Why you should listen: I heard someone say (roughly paraphrased), that Marvin Gaye was in an entirely different plane of spiritual existence when he produced the 1971 What’s Going On album. This music will bring you to a rainy, pensive day, in the perspective of a person who knows of all the problems in the world but, as an individual, is hopeless to do anything but mourn.
4. Talking Heads
Genre: new wave 80’s, funk, rock
Favorite three songs: “This Must Be the Place”, “Stay Up Late”, “Nothing but Flowers”
Quotable lyric: “Home is where I wanna be/but I guess I’m already there/I come home, she lifted up her wings/I guess this must be the place” (from “This Must be the Place”)
Why you should listen: If you’re up for something a little quirky, sometimes playful and sometimes existential (often all at once), seek no further than Talking Heads with their unique frontman David Byrne. I believe there is something in this band for everyone, even if it’s just one song that tickles your fancy.
What do you think?
Thank you so much for taking the time to consume this MyTake. I really want to know your opinions!

Thankfully I haven't had anything on repeat lately. I don't like songs running through my head, but it happens sometimes.
I get a lot of CDs from the library (hundreds of them over time). Since I only have them for a short time, sometimes I'll play them several times before I return them. I haven't done that in a while.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/3C5zYKIuoxghttps://www.youtube.com/embed/2Gn9A-kdsRoI never heard of Hozier. I have CDs for Sada, Marvin Gaye, and Talking Heads. I listen to Marvin Gaye the most out of those. I think I've only listened to Talking Heads once since I got the CD. Although I used to listen to them a lot of YouTube. I didn't like them when they were first popular. I started to like them many years later. Then my like of them faded again.
Here are a couple of old songs I've listened to a lot in the last 6 months or so. I had I'll Be Seeing You on repeat last fall, but I recovered.
OK, I didn't listen to the Ella version of Cry Me A River before posting it. I only listened to a few bars. I've actually been listening to the Julie London version which I think is a lot better.
When I read the first bit of your take about thinking you have excellent taste, I thought "right, another 21 year old who thinks she/he knows what real music is". Then I read on and was pleasantly surprised to to see you actually do. Respect to you, girl.
