1st off I want to say everyone is entited to their own opinion. I disagree with the choice. And it's definitely NOT because I am a racist. Which I most certainly am NOT! I do NOT hate anyone because of their skin color. I was just surprised they did not match the description of what I have grew up knowing Ariel to be. Let red heads have their moment. On that note I also disagree with the choice of Emma Watson playing Belle in the live action Beauty and the beast. She ruined my all time favorite movie. It just wasn't who I pictured playing belle plus she can't sing. I think people are forgetting they also came out with a Cindrella movie (which I loved as a kid by the way) who was also black. You can watch it on Disney plus. Also there is Tiana. Mulan, Jasmine and even the movie life size with Tyra Banks as barbie (who is beyond gorgeous) . All woman of color. Why is everyone hating on people who have a different opinion on who the casting should have been? I would have had the same opinion if they made Ariel Caucasian blonde with pink eyes. Or they made her have green hair and blue skin. It wouldn't be what I expected and grew up knowing. I feel like if you don't agree you get called racist. And that's not fair! in most cases, thats bold accusation to make about someone. And In most cases is further from the truth. So STOP the hate.

Hair color can be changed for a role, but there's little less blatant than the character being of a completely different race.

It's sad that you have to go on a spiel of how you're not racist, and point out other white characters you didn't like in the role of other white characters- or how you had to kowtow to the "beauty" of women of color; so as to flatter them, lest they attack you (which they will anyway), just to avoid the inevitable backlash of speaking out (while being white).

The little mermaid is a white character, in the same way that Cinderella and Annie are, and they're being replaced with black people. Hamilton, Achilles, etc... this isn't a one-off thing, as if all characters stayed the same, and it's only this one outlier... This does not happen in the reverse, and it's disgusting how white people are not only suppose to accept it (or not notice it)- we're suppose to CELEBRATE IT!

Frankly, it is really best that the mermaid is Black because it maximizes the believability of a mermaid's existence.

If a mermaid was to exist, it would have evolved from the same line as humans and, certainly, far enough in the past to when early humans were solely living in Africa. Thus, mermaids would have evolved from Africa as well and thus would be Black.

It's a fiction movie. The book by hans Christain Anderson published in 1837 is a made up story. MADE UP! Mermaids are Not real. I'm not saying mermaids a can't be black. They can be any color you want them to be. But Ariel was made up to be a red head. And the live action is not what people were expecting. With science/speculative fiction - and a new species on Earth like a mermaid would classify as science/speculative fiction - there is something called "suspension of disbelief". Some stories are just too outlandish to be believed and so it's bullshit. But, something like sound in space for a movie's dramatic effect can be overlooked - we can "suspend our disbelief" that sound can occur in space (it can't).

So, if you want to "suspend your disbelief" in the existence of mermaids for the purposes of the story, it is easier to do so if she is Black than if she is White.

Now, I don't think you are a racist at all but I also don't think your being uptight that Ariel is no longer a White redhead is warranted. As you said, Ariel is a made-up character. Did Hans Christian Anderson describe her as a redhead? If he did, then, to be faithful to the book, then she should have been cast as a redheaded White girl. If her physical features were not significantly described, then it's irrelevant as to how she is cast. I did some R&D and Ariel isn't even a character. So, Hans Christian Anderson's mermaid is irrelevant because she's not Ariel who is a Disney-invented character. Disney can do whatever they wish.

Kids raised with the 1989 Disney film "The Little Mermaid" need to get a grip; it's not gospel.

Besides, I am waiting for the transgendered version to come out.

In humans, vitamin D production requires sunshine. But mermaids aren't human. So their DNA must have something else - something fish- or cetacean-related.

So, my point about divergent evolution still stands that mermaids will have evolved sufficiently far back when hominids were still exclusive to Africa. Furthermore, mermaids would have evolved like cetaceans - mammals that returned to the sea.

Had they cast someone who was black with redhair, people would still have an attitude and use the excuse of woke/left/sjw/etc. At the end of the day, people, specifically those with the issue of seeing Halle and/or her skintone/race in the role, will continue to go to Disney World/Land and pay to see disney films so its all a waste of time to say otherwise. Call me a heretic but I never saw Ariel as a "red head" because her hair wasn't human hair color red (which is more like orange) but crimson red. So I never thought of it as a natural human hair color but rather something like how mermaids sometimes have green or blue hair.

Fun fact is that they talk so much about diversity, yet they do something completely opposite. Redheads are 1-2% of USA population, and Africans are 13-14% of USA population.

So in order to make a movie more diverse they actually made it less diverse.

Believe it or not but I have been a victim of racism. I was with my 3 girlfriends who are Taiwanese. We ordered an uber one night. The guy pulls up. He said to my friend and I quote " I will take you 3 but I'm not taking the white girl" we fought with him and asked him why. he kept saying " I'm not taking her because She is white. She isn't welcomed to step foot in this car" I was so shocked and taken back by it. We just called another uber. And my friend gave him a Bad review. So I experienced what it feels to be hated because the color of your skin. And it really sucked I didn't do anything to this man. I didn't even know him.
And the fact this movie is causing so much hate towards people it blows my mind
