Do you prefer sub or dub?

When watching a foreign movie/show do you prefer watching in the original language with subtitles, or dubbed over in English (or whatever your preferred language is)

I prefer subtitles. I think dubs always sound cartoonish and cheesy. Especially if it’s a live action show. Dubs for animes/cartoons are fine though.

Also it depends on my attention span at the moment too lol. I’m very adhd so if I know I won’t be able to pay attention then I will do dub

I voted for the third option by mistake, so I gotta clarify something: my preferred language is English (US English, to be precise), though I'm not American. Ofcourse I watch non-American tv shows (and sometimes movies) and when I do, I prefer them to have US English subtitles. Mostly because the subtitle makers in my country are utterly illiterate and all they do is annoy me with their illiteracy in my native language.

For American movies and tv shows I don't need subs cuz I understand every single American word the actors say (+ I hate dubbing) but I still download US English subtitles and keep them around only for special cases - such as a fast speaking scientist who spills hundreds of scientific terms that I don't understand, or for funny scenes to make some cool memes, like the meme below. As I said, I understand every single American word but having the subtitles present saves me the trouble of typing the text for the meme myself.

Subtitles. I don't want the sound to be ruined. I want to hear the tone and pitch of their voices and the background. Dubs make the movie seem faked or something.

Especially when I watch anime. It's so weird to me when I see it dubbed, it doesn't fit in my head.

There are a few exceptions though, but 99,5% of the time, I would watch a movie or series with subtitles.

Remember the movie in Japanese about Godzilla? The words were spoken, and then 30 seconds later the guy's lips moved. My gerbil can dub better than that.

I like subtitles, no matter what the language is. It helps me understand what is being said, since sometimes the sound is not that good.

True. There was one movie that I watched twice, once with subs and the other dubbed. Some of the lines were completely different and actually made more sense in the original language

Both in regards to Asian films and anime I usually prefer subs. It's more authentic and gives it a unique feel as a westerner watching it. Some choice anime, however I choose to watch dubbed, if they feel particularly 'more manly' or well done in English, like DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho.

When I'm tired and distracted, I ain't reading $hit. So I prefer dubbed. I can enjoy the show more. I can long a way for a moment. Do not need my eyes glued to screen reading. If I want to read I'll read a book. Not that I'd never, I have in the past. I rather not.

I prefer sub cause sub is annoying when there's action scene you never have the time to read it all or if you do you don't have the time to watch the imagine, it's annoying. Also I'm French and here the dub is really great.

I prefer watching anime, or other language shows in the original language because it just feels better, though if I am lazy or don't like the original I will watch it in English lol

The squid games was... it worked for me. Unlike anime, it didn't hit because they're real people ya know. But still, dub makes it feel more... americanized.

i don't like dubbed, i mean i can deal with it sure but if their mouths aren't matching the words that's just annoying - plus i'm so used to subtitles for everything now

With most anime, I prefer dubbed. Everything else kinda depends. For example, I tried to watch Squid Game in English and couldn't even make it a full ten minutes. 😂

Both have their benefits. I’m a slow reader and hate what feels like constant pausing. But that’s just on me. If I didn’t have those issues I don’t know why I would prefer the dub. They feel so much better in their original language.
