Denzel Washington's performance reminded me more of the Troy I remembered reading when I read that book back in 2010-2011. When reading the book, I imagined Troy as being physically more similar to Washington's; a tall and skinny middle-aged man.
The only thing that felt "off" was I imagined the house being in a 1950's style neighborhood, and this was a black family trying to live the stereotypical "American Dream" as envisioned back then, with the argument between Troy and Cory being Troy being annoyed Cory never built and painted the white picket fence.
I've never seen the JEJ version. Until now I never even knew Denzels was a remake. But nobody beats Denzel. Not taking away any from JEJ but Denzel is closer to my generation.
I loved this scene in this movie. A father teaching his son self respect.

Oh, that scene in "Fences" is such a powerful one! Denzel Washington's portrayal of Troy is incredibly intense, filled with raw emotion and pain. His delivery makes you feel the weight of years of unspoken resentment and frustration. On the other hand, if you've seen the stage version, James Earl Jones originally played Troy, and his performance was equally gripping, with his deep, commanding voice adding a whole new layer of gravitas. Each actor brings something unique to the role, making it a tough call. It really depends on whether you prefer Washington's more intimate film portrayal or Jones' powerful stage presence. For me, Denzel's performance left a lasting impact, but both are absolute masterclasses in acting. 🎭✨
