Miss this kind of great writing.

I always find good films from practically any time and with actors who I've not liked much, or those who were touted as great, not so great.
Some films people find wonderful because it was the time of their life that they saw them in and that association that makes them "better".
But there are films made long before I existed that are excellent with wonderful actors and acting, and ones made in the past few years that are also wonderful.
But WONDERFUL films are always few and far between. What has likely happened too is that your tastes in films in far more refined and precise as you've gotten older and you find fewer films great because, few films ARE great. And you find out what makes a film great for you, which also narrows over time.
Cillian Murphy is a great actor in a host of varied roles, "Oppenheimer" one of his best recent ones. Laurence Olivier was too. But there are dozens of good and very good actors. There are a few awful , wooden ones, such as 50 cent and Van Diesel. But the bottom of films and acting are as narrow as the top. It's not the year of films, it's your apprehension of what is best and your tastes that have changed.
I think it's just a sign of the times. Movies are a representation of the world in it's current time and I think that's why they're not as good.
Holding up those mirrors 🪞
@usernameobvious Lol!!
I think it is streaming?
Cinematic movies make half their box office in the first week. Cinema schedules are limited; films need to 'pop' on release. Poor quality movies just didn't have much of a market before streaming.
Streaming services exist to hold your eyeballs not as a form of art to make you a better person. So much of the content that could have made good movies is becoming 10-hour limited series, 80% you could easily have left on the chopping room floor. So much more is made and presented than anyone would have ever watched previously.
There are exceptions.
- Netflix and the like do invest in expensive flagship movies still, albeit in small numbers.
- Movies that have artistic merit often do a tour of pay-per-view services before being absorbed into streaming packages.
Just a few random thoughts. It is a good question though.
It's hard to escape the conclusion that average quality has gone down hill. Top Gun: Maverick was Academy nominated for best film when the artistically superior, if still questionable, Top Gun was laughed at by critics in the 1980s, other than for the bits in the air.
Oh... and of course... nostalgia / sample selection is always a big part of the answer to these questions... e. g. most movies in the 70s were garbage, but it is remembered as a decent period for cinema because all of the garbage has been forgotten and never watched again.
@MrChinaski Even the garbage was better in the 1970s.
@AngryCarl3 yes
Lack of fresh material.
Poor writing.
Terrible directing.
Horrible cinematography, camera work and lighting.
Low budget sets and over reliance on CG.
Political correctness.
Movies, like music these days, are cranked out by people with computers, not artists.
It wasn't even possible for the general public to stream movies before the early to mid-2000s, with a major turning point occurring in January 2007 when Netflix launched its "Watch Now" instant streaming feature.
Before that, films had to be good enough for people to go to the theater to see them.
Films that were successful at the box office were made by professionals.
I totally get what you mean 😅
A lot of 90s–2000s rom-coms had this perfect mix of messy chemistry, slightly unrealistic but charming plots, and sharp, character-based humor.
Now studios lean harder on “safe” formulas, IP, and spectacle. Comedy also shifted to improv-heavy or super self-aware styles, and rom-coms moved to streaming with lower budgets. There are still gems like “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Palm Springs,” “Set It Up,” but that cozy mid-budget theatrical rom-com era really was special ❤️🎬

Highly disagree, you simply aren't watching the right movies. It has nothing to do with today. Obsession is a 10/10 and that just came out, that director is young and his works are fascinating, can't wait to see his future projects.
Can't speak to romcoms... as I don't even see what's good in the old ones but I'm certain it has nothing to do with the time it came in. Books, Films, Games aren't a monolith that are time gated and often the point it is be rose tinted glasses, to ignorance of the good that came out overlooking it.
There will a be year some less good comes out to another year but that's not equal to such idea, just what has happened throughout time.
"The message"
Script writers and regisseurs are so eager to put "The message" in their movies, they forget movies have primarily to entertain. Instead there is lot of identity politics and social polarization. while the main content of movies and tv series offer just low quality, or is diluted over 20 episodes or two 2,5 hours movies.
Another problem is choice of actors who have zero charisma or just don't fit in particular role. Then when the movie flops come racism and white supremacy accusation.
"What's up, my Nigga?" - Jackie Chan
Political correctness ruined comedy movies.
We can no longer make off-color jokes, no longer call faggots "faggots" and no longer criticize any "protected status" groups. Unless you're me and just don't give a damn about what people consider socially acceptable.
Very true
I thought wedding daze sucked. I watched it because isla fisher was in it

I been saying the same thing for quite sometime now , why I barely watch movies anymore , even if it catches my interest and I take the time to watch it , it usually isn’t as good as I thought it would be ,
Most newer movies today put me to sleep , if it doesn’t keep my interest for long where older movies keep my interest and I don’t fall asleep , why I don’t go to the movies anymore either because I don’t want to pay to fall asleep lol
Hopefully Hollywood returns to cinema releases / theatre releases of "films calling back to the fun and light 2000s/2010s era's"
All they do is modify the tech and the modify the jokes to fit the times. But the spirit of those comedies from the 2000s or even late 90s should be embraced.
😋👀 Timeless.
Societal decay. People are forgeting how to do a lot of things. There used to be good guys in movies to root for. Now their just as likely to be a junkie of drunk. There are no ideals nothing to inspire. It's just garbage so people have quit watching.
There are only "so many ideas" for story lines that will appeal to masses of people. Many successful movies repeat the themes of older successful movies and update them for the current generation. When this happens in your lifetime, you think " Oh, I've seen this before, it's the same as whatever movie". That happens a lot if you watch a lot of movies.
One thing, IMHO, is the movie makers are caught up in "political correctness" and does not want to be "cancelled" by the extremists.
One of the greatest comedy movies of all time, "Blazing Saddles" could not be made today because of all the whiners who needs their diapers changed. Same goes for most of the Marx Brothers movies.
They're not taking as many risks as they used to and also just we're used to everything. If you saw the new Dune movies when you were 14 you'd probably love them for the rest of your life but now they're still good but not mindblowing.
That's EXACTLY how I feel and what I've been saying for a while now. I actually used to be excited to see movies back in the day. Now, most of the new ones are shit and woke with unnecessary gay people just thrown in to fit their gay agenda.
@Simslover92 too much propaganda ruins the story.
public gets offended by everything so can’t put that in movies.
"So you take plot 27A, make it glossy, make it slick?"
- Betty Schaefer, Sunset Boulevard
The movie industry is full of talentless DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) hires. Not just hiring, you can't get finance for your movie unless it includes themes of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
You know when the Golden Age of movies is? Eleven.
Films you saw then were new (to you), the stories were fresh (to you). When you get to my age, it's all "ah, another version of...".
Woke ideology. Blazing Saddles could never be made now.
For the same reason music and governments aren't as good as they were in the past: all the good ideas have been used up.
I didn't notice a difference, but I don't really watch movies anymore, I switched to shows 2 decades ago
Mainstream movies are like mainstream music: ideas that have been recycled to death.
@Simslover92 always asking myself the same question.
They don’t have any proper skills nowadays everything‘s already been made. They don’t know what to do. They’re not creative so they just make remake ever since COVID-19 came out the movie industry flopped
You are getting older. You are now officially a junior member of the club!
Wedding daze 🤣🤣
He met her now, asked her if she will marry him and she said yes!
It was like, am i dreaming, don't tell me that she really said yes haha
Movies are always made to open for the youngest demo, so the older generations always say they're not as good.
Im 25 and i still think movies of my prime are trash
The movies have a hidden political message today
What is it? ... I promise I won't tell...
They can only make so many movies til it becomes nearly impossible to have a great ones because all the scripts of the previous ones have already been used.
Not even James Cameron can top Terminator 2.
Terminator 3, I actually found was superior - it's all art. I felt T3 spoke to me on a deeper level, more relevant level 🎚️ and felt a richer tigher story pace
*tighter
@usernameobvious You just dug the Womaninator.
I guess movie directors don't have any inspiration, most great ideas were already used.
Because of unchecked rampant wokery and a lack of decent ideas.
Simples...
Actors don't have to act anymore, it's all CGI and cartoons.
That's why Polar Express 2 could make so many hundreds of millions : actors become green screen model wearers like Avatar behind the scenes
Performance capture
@usernameobvious yes.
It is because they removed the invisible paint from the cameras.
Streaming and instant gratification reduces the value of entertainment in general.
Political correctness and lack of new ideas perhaps
I'd disagree. I think a lot of the older movies are kind of dull in comparison to what comes out now
The movie industry is running out of ideas.
Thats not true some new movies are very good some are even better than the old movies. Some old movies aren't very good at all
Our expectations are more extreme now.
There isn't a need for creativity anymore
Because wokeness destroyed modern cinema.
They're run out of ideas
Political correctness killed humor
Political correctness has been ebbing for some years now... the movies haven't improved.
That's true for everything but Hollywood, movie studios are unfortunately infested with woke idiots
To answer the question, I feel audience are fixated on "new ideas" instead of working around with cliches, like y2k did. I love 2000s!
all the talent is in TV and video games now
No fresh ideas.
