Who Else is Willing to Save a Life and Give a Future This Holiday Season?

This is my very first myTake ever. I'm not any good at this. So, please, bear with me and excuse me if this doesn't impress you.

Last month, I just adopted a old dog from an animal shelter. I had been planning on getting a pet for quite some time and yesterday was that day to do it. I picked an aging mutt who was days away from euthanasia because she had been there for nearly a year without any takers.

I know I'd probably benefit more by having a vibrant younger dog who can run with me during my jogs and effortlessly solicit some welcome adorations from young women in the parks. My new pal isn't anywhere like that. She's got scars on here face and a bit of a limp. Those are probably what compelled me to choose her. I did it out of pity.

Last week, I shared my bacon with her while she sat on my lap in the dining room. Her face lit up with joy and she thanked me with endless licks. It's as if I woke up her taste buds to something special for the very first. Since that morning, she followed me wherever I walked to in and around the house.

Yesterday, she ran her first mile with me after a week of training walks around our neighborhood blocks. She now barks out of playfulness and barks alarmingly when she feels there is a threat nearby.

By the way, I named her Hope. This morning, Hope and I returned to the animal shelter to adopt a mature cat to share the love. Hope picked out the little kitty herself. That special cat is currently on my shoulder and Hope's chin is on my lap while I'm typing this. I hope our lives will pay it forward so that another animal has a chance for hope too.

You did so well for your first take! We adopted two of our three dogs and both were better than our first which was from a breeder. I hope that if people are thinking of adopting- either for a Christmas gift or for whatever reason- that they do so with an informed heart.
Be sure that the pet you bring into your lives is meant for your lives. Don't bring a large Sporting Dog to live in a 700 square foot studio apartment or if you don't have time for plenty of exercise with him/her.
If you have children, be sure that the breed lives well with the younger set is an is a "durable" breed that can hold its' own against ravaging toddlers. And be sure that you can afford the vet exams and shots each year. We our the third owner of our current dog. She had to be returned because the previous owner was a pre-med student and didn't have the time for her. His lose was our gain, but it was avoidable if he had picked a pet matched with the amount of care he could provide.

I adopted a dog on Black Friday 3 years ago. Ditched the mall to finally get a dog. I had a dog stolen from me. ( I had him for 8 years) and it was hard to get over it. Hell im still not over it. But I wasn’t ready to get another dog. But I felt it was time to. They presented me with 3 dogs because after crying so much I didn’t know what to choose. The last one she came up to me and sat next to me. Yup she’s the one. She’s such a sweetheart and has been through so much abuse. She’s gotten better and more comfortable. She is a cuddle bug who loves to keep you company. She never barks :(. BUT! She’ll make cute noises when she’s very happy.
She’s a little tease and I love her with my whole damn soul!

That is really beautiful.
I would love a dog, given my schedule I know it wouldn't be reasonable given they need walks.
However walking into the adoption centre I seen these 2 boy Guinea pigs, 3 months old being dumped there by their owners. They were so skittish, the youngest had conjunctivitis. So we had to have them.
6 months later they call to us as soon as they hear the fridge open.
Went back to the centre to pick up supplies a month ago, was 2 beautiful girls. I was conflicted given we have the boys. However my boyfriend knew I was conflicted, asked to hold them. And just seen one of the girls was getting bald patches and what looked like bite marks, her nails had curled enough to be grown back into her hands, she"d scream getting picked up. So he took them.
Spent £260 on treatment for her in the first week trying to sort her baldness, nail clippings, examining her skin for the red marks.
But really happy they just aren't there anymore. And her hairs growing back :)

Well done, I once took my kids to visit a nearby animal shelter so they could see what it was like (it was an open house). I was struck at how differently the dogs behaved than the ones I had known as people's pets. They were very aggressive at getting our attention and I felt back for them that their home was the shelter.

This is amazing! You did the right thing. And I really wish more people would think like this.
My dog is now 14yo. To others she was an unwanted baby girl. To me she was love at first sight.
I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and we kinda clicked together. She came running into my arms and that was it. I took her home on the spot. ☺

I'm filling up!! This is a beautiful story. Me and my family have saved 2 dogs now, a golden Labrador last year who lived in a kennel outside, and another golden Labrador just a few months ago (coincidence) and they are so happy and excited all the time because they're in a warm house sharing our dinner, lol

An Epic First Mytake!! I am so happy that you a adopted a little guy!! It is not for this moment, my roommate does not want pet dander in his house and my moms place charges extra money that is not part of the budget to spend on top of rent for a dog or cat, but I see myself possibly doing this in the future.

I want another dog so bad.
My first dog is mutt who was found in a drainage ditch when she was a baby. She was drowning and some teenagers saved her.
My second dog is a full blood German Shepherd who was being abused by his breeder. He had sores in his neck from his collar being so tight.

Nice article! I have one stray cat and one shelter cat. They don't get along and they have to live in separate arias of my home. I wish that I could adopt another cat but I know that my oldest cat would probably attack any new cat that I brought in the house. I don't have any place to keep a third cat and that's why I can't adopt right now. So disappointing!

Adopt AFTER Christmas, not before. Dont ever get a Christmas pet, come January the shelters are going to be flooded.

Now I'm going to cry. I wish they didn't put down animals, whats the point? If you're going to run a shelter, do it properly and actually love the animals. I'd love to but I already have 3 chickens, 3 dogs, and a cat.

I would love to, though I'd have to see how my dog would feel being around another dog. Plus I will probably be on campus in next college I transfer to.
