Impossible.
Your friendship has always been a romantic one (from his perspective, even if only subconsiously) although he has tried to be a friend, he was probably always hoping for the outcome of a romatic relationship.
The best you can do is tell him how you feel, tell him what you feel (e.g. if he doesn't stop annoying you by constantly demanding your attention your friendship wll be lost).
Then all you can do is see how things go. The friend you first made will always be there, there's no loss of that, you just can't take back the romantic aspect.
I'm in a similar situation with my best friend, only the sleeping with each other part was derailed and didn't happen. Same result tho, infact slightly worse as I will always regret not pushing a little harder given her current boyfriend whent through same stuff but he was more persistant and pressuring (where as I tried to keep the friendship like she requested and went with what she said not how she acted which was a HUGE mistake).
So, in a way, I'm saying whilst it seems bad the way it played out. It in fact played out better than it might of. Well, for him anyway. He won't be questioning wether he did the right things (or maybe either way a guy would do that). Then I'm seeing this from my love of my best friend which is very true.
I suggest you give the relationship a try and see if you can make things work (then I would say that). He will get much less annoying as an accepted boyfriend as he is as a rejected friend. After all you said you found him attractive at one time? He's the same guy still, he's just in love (or at least, in luv).
He will "get over" his annoyingness if he feels he's in a secure relationship with you. If he doesn't then you can always dump his ass ;). Will be better for you both I feel (again I realise I'm highly bias, I should ask my best friend how she feels. lol. I think she would sympathise as she missed the me I was before I cared too much too).
