I had the BEST pediatrician ever. He knew I was living in a state where I had absolutely no female support and this was going to be my 1st child. He said, "As long as he's fed and cleaned, it's OK to put him in his crib and walk away when he's crying. He won't hurt himself and the act of crying builds his lung muscles. He'll probably cry himself back to sleep."
Crying didn't apply to my first but my 2nd cried ALL THE TIME!!! This advice came in handy with him!!!
My kids are always always loud! Especially my middle son. He cried so much as a baby and at 5 still crying lol (he actually had a hearing problem tho got tubes in his ears now). I've learned to ignore it, put headphones with loud music on. About twice a day I lock myself in my room just to get away to have a quiet mintue.
In Japan, there are lots of popular tricks involved around using sounds. Different babies stop crying from different sounds but a popular one is a car engine:

my mother would put me by the window where the cold air breeze would hit me and then I would sleep peacefully for hours
just careful...
my body runs at a slight lower temperature than averages, lol
not a universal solution
@joygirl Just move him before the sun comes up.
@NathanDavis Really. That was risky by your mother.
@joygirl lol
@dustybiker yes, but what is life without some risks, here and there...
@NathanDavis That is very true.

Fathers don't? :D
With my little daughter we figured out that each time we were driving somewhere - she'd fall asleep on the spot.
Now imagine Dad Andreas some time in the evening, driving one round around the block :D
I found that if pacifying didn't help, then as hard as it may be, or even sounds, I would try to ignore the screaming in the hope that the little guy would tire himself out and simply fall asleep.
They get loud if hurting or spoiled with zero boundaries set.
Mothers (and fathers) learn to deal with it. Babies aren't loud forever.
I should probably mention that the best way to stop a bay's screaming is to distract them. That is, of course, if their "complaint" isn't more simple: tired, hungry or just pooped.
@joygirl As a parent of 3 kids (all grown now), I can tell you there sometimes are different cries that mother and father can learn. Usually, though, it's easier to go through the list of why they are crying, which is, in order: tired, hungry, dirty/wet diaper, want attention... and teething, when they are older (solution for that is to let the baby suck your pinkie finger).
@joygirl No, they're not sucking their finger, they're sucking yours. There's no connection for them between a part of their body and their sucking... your finger is just a foreign object to them.
My mom says I was just a talkative kid not a kid who shouts out all the time. This wasn't the issue for her. I shouted for milk or attention and when given that I will quite down.
It's my understanding that they figure out what's needed and act accordingly.
My mother says babies cry differently for each thing they need, such as a diaper change or hunger.
I admire my wife when our children were babies. She has the patience of Job. I could give her a break and when she walked in the door she could tell that one of the kids had messed their britches. I could not tell.
I have no idea. Honestly respect to them. I couldn't deal with that lol
Well, from seeing mamas in stores, they usually give the baby a pacifier or a bottle to calm them down.
No idea, I don't have the patience for that.
@EmmaMary
Plenty of father's deal with screaming babies as well. How do you deal with it? You learn your child and what her different cries mean.
My sister had a one year old and she told me it's mainly the first month, maybe upto two. After that, the loudness quiets down.
pick them up and hold them until they stop or throw up all over you...
They train it out of em or tune it out.
I was told when id cry a lot as an infant I was left in a room until I fell asleep or stopped crying.
Wow that pic is why I quit my reatail job after 20 years. Got so tired of screaming babies
Children are definitely hard work
