Do anyone else's parents say something really mean and then act like they never said it?

I'll give you guys an example in order for you to understand. When I turned 18 many of my friends got part-time jobs. Some of them were in college and some weren't, but the idea of making my own money and being more productive sounded interesting. When the subject of jobs came up, I told them I might like to get a job during summer, where I wouldn't have to study much. My mom's reaction was her getting up and shouting "don't even think of doing something this fucking stupid!"

A few months go by and my parents see that I'm starting to really like cooking. That's when my mom suggests I should look around for a job in a restaurant during the summer. I just looked at her confused. I said "didn't you say you didn't want me getting a job?" and she responded, "why would I ever do that? It's your life and you can do whatever you want.". Is it just me, or are all parents this strange?
