Opinions on a free cat?

So I talked to my therapist today and we were talking about the importance I place on my pets especially my cat. She told me that in a few weeks she’ll have kittens that will be looking for new homes. She said they were feral (they are with their mom I couldn’t tell if they were born yet or not though based off of how she said it) and it’s a matter of waiting for them to come out of hiding. I don’t know how feral they are though and I didn’t have time to ask her really. She said she’d let me know when they do emerge from their hiding and send me pictures and stuff.

im starting a new job soon and I’ll be able to care for it. I’ve been wanting to get another cat for about two months now but I feel like my family would get annoyed at me for it since my mom will say it’s too soon and be cautious about it and my grandma would just be upset that I brought another cat into her home. I’m not wanting to do this just for selfish reasons but also because my other cat needs someone to play with and I know dogs aren’t the same. I don’t know what to think as I would really like to have another cat but I don’t want to cause conflict. Me and my therapist talked about me gaining my own independence and doing what makes me happy and stuff but also making compromises with my family on things. She wouldn’t charge me for the kitten she said just take care of it. What do you think? Is this a good idea?

It's hard to say without knowing your family, I love pets, have 5 of them, but started adopting the second and the others after I was already living alone. It's very valid that you get another one, but probably it's better that your family at least accept it first to avoid conflict and even needing to return the cat later

My grandma wouldn’t accept it regardless unless they don’t come upstairs. Our house has 5 dogs and a cat currently because my brother had to bring his two over otherwise he would have been evicted. I’m trying to get my own place before I get one but I won’t be able to adopt one until I’m 21. My cat punks my mom’s dog mainly because he wants to play and he does the same thing to my dog but I know it’s not the same to him as playing with another cat.

Yes, the cat probably feels lonely and punks the dog to compensate, but maybe you find a way to sort things out with them

It’s not possible with my grandma. She doesn’t care for pets especially cats. I do my best to keep my cat off her furniture and tables and stuff as well as keeping him from kneading at her furniture and rugs but she’s still not happy. I’ve never been to make her happy. But I don’t want this type of opportunity to pass me again. It already passed me once.

Firstly you don't know if your cat you already own will accept the new cat. Some animals look and appear like they are lonely but sometimes they aren't. You also really need to consider the people who you live with this isn't your home you own yourself. Another thing to consider is in the cats are feral will you have the time to take the kitten to the vet and train the kitten. You also have to make sure this person isn't taking the kittens from mum when they are too young to he separated

My cat had no issues with the cat I had before he died. I introduced them slowly and monitored them. I’ve never had an issue with training or caring for a kitten. My cat is 2 and he’s never opening attacked another animal.

My family wouldn’t be happy regardless of what I do on my own terms as if I ever want to do something on my own terms I have to fight for it. I’m planning on getting my own place but I have a few steps to get through first. I wouldn’t take any of them if they are too young and a lot of people don’t give kittens away until 6-8 weeks where they are learning to use the litter box and eat solid food. Now only that but I’m making sure I have the money to get them taken to the vet before even get one because my own cat needs to go to the vet. The first thing I would be doing is taking the kitten to the vet.

My cat also exhibits traits that my other cat had like following me around, wanting to be in my room and stuff. That cat was constantly under me and now my outgoing energetic cat is underneath me or my mom all the time.

If your family is saying it's too soon and your grandma doesn't want another kitten in the house, then you're gonna have to listen to them. It is your grandma's house so it's her call if she wants the kitten there or not. You can try convincing/comprising with them, you can show them the picture of the kitten to see if that will change their mind but if they say no then you will just have to stick with the cat you have.

It’s too zoo for my mom and my grandma would kick us and the pets out if she knew we had somewhere to go. I have a place I can go to but my cat doesn’t. That’s the only reason I haven’t moved out temporarily. I’m trying to get my license and a car but my mom isn’t teaching me and my grandma drains me of whatever money I have next to me paying for the pets that live here currently

Then it sounds like you're already over your head in other responsibilities. You already have 5 dogs, you live with your grandmother, and currently don't have enough money or a job yet. Sorry but it just doesn't sound like a good time trying to get a new pet when your living situation isn't in the best condition. You need to wait this out until you can get your own place and your own job. That should br your main priority right now, not another cat. You're biting off more than you can chew, if you don't want more problems arising then you need to listen to your grandma/mom and not get the cat.

I’m literally waiting on this background check to come back. I only have a cat. I had 2 and was managing fine on the little pay I made. It’s either I sit here and let them control my life and desires, allowing them to treat me like I’m not allowed a life or I make my own decisions and be happier and accept those consequences cuz I can’t compromise with them

You're waiting for a background check, so technically you are still unemployed and living under someone's else roof. If you don't like following the rules, then just move out now if you're not going to obey/listen. You'll make work some how.

On the far we had cats that lived under the house. When kittens emerged they were feral and would bite. They needed to be coached and hand fed to learn to trust you. Then they learn the joys of being petted etc and they become domestic cats. A bit more work till you get there.

They will never be happy. I’ve sacrificed a lot of things for my family in order to keep the peace yet it’s never enough. I’m under two people and it’s like they don’t fully care about my desires and stuff. My pets have always been a priority to me mainly because I know they depend on me. They keep me going and I’m trying to gain my own footing especially when I haven’t really had a voice for years.

Get a job, find a few other girls who want to share an apartment, and then move out. Until then, nobody else is supposed to fully care about what you want.

I’m getting a job I’m waiting on a background check and I’m not share an apartment with anyone. They should care tho because I’m 18, my grandma makes me pay her damn cable bill and I’m half responsible for feeding and caring for pets that aren’t mine. It’s not just my pets and my mom’s pets it’s also my brother’s pets and he hasn’t taken them to get their shots or anything he claims he’s too broke to get dog food. He already owes me 300 bucks in vet fees 85 of which wasn’t for vets but was for me to get a new litter box for my cat (it was my money) I didn’t have a bank card yet so I asked his wife to put it on her card and buy it for me but she gave it to him and he turned around and used it for gas money. They are never going to pay me back yet they also want to “advise” me in my life. I’ve actively paid for my grandma’s fucking smoking addiction, paid for food, cable/internet bill among taking care of her shit and I just get spit at and looked down on. She’s never pleased and lately neither is my mom since I have to always ask her if I can hangout with anyone which right now is mainly my boyfriend and my best friend. I haven’t seen my best friend since prom which was in April yet she’s still can say I don’t know. I’m over caring about what they want if they don’t care about what I want
