You ever have to take care of a family member because of a disability or other health problems?

My dad somehow sprained his ankle last night and i had to drive him everywhere today. even helping him out of the car to stand up. I don't mind doing this of course but it is a little sad seeing him basically deteriorate over time. thats old age for you.

I think most people have gone through that.

I remember being in my 20's taking care of my dad when he either had painful GAUT or, since he's diabetic, he at times in the past, had been hypoglycemic (low blood sugar from taking too much insulin meds), and so that is MORE troubling and life-threatening when that happens, but I love him and so I try my best to be helpful and supportive. After all, if I was a different child of his, like any father-daughter relationship, it's just very natural for you to look out for those who looked out for you and raised you when you were a baby and child. It's just gratitude! I think any other daughter would do the same I mean, for their father... unless he wasn't a good dad? Lol, I don't know. Maybe I am just a really good person! Or I try to be! But my point is I look out for my kin and I think a lot of others would do the same!

My mom too, I would try to help her if she needed it, but she usually LOVES her independence (both of my parents do), and so in that case, lucky me that most of the time, even though they are in their 70's now (or close to it. Mom has only one month to go till the big 7 0 ), they are still kicking and living ! ! Thank God. I still have them. They've given me LOTS of great life advice. Didn't always listen and for that, I had my butt burned several times, but still... I don't blame them for those things, no way.

yes i would say so. and unfortunately i have known of kids who do not step in to look after their aging parents. its unfortunate but it does definitely happen.

oh and my parents are also in their 70s. fancy that

Not full time, but I’ve taken care of my grandmother a few times when my mum has been out of the country. Last time mum left the country my grandmother had a fall and cut her arm open, so she stayed with me for a few weeks and I helped her with changing her bandages and helping her get dressed.


I’ve also helped her with going to the hospital many times, since I live closest to her compared to my family.

Yes I have. It has felt empowering a bit.

I don’t seek it, but it reminds me I am capable and that’s why I am designated to do this. I feel more able to do it for them than anyone else, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to be in control of what my parents could or couldn’t do.

I will be their guardian. I will be the one to lay them to rest one day.

Only I would ensure their most truest comfort and I know them well enough to know what their favorite foods and things are. What would make them happy, and what places they’d like to go.

Seems one knowing should be the person to do it, but then again I always felt like my family’s protector. I just got that twisted idea in my head one day, at a very young age. I just loved them. That’s how my love for

them unfolded, and expressed itself.

Yes till just recently I was looking after my mother with the onset of Alzheimer's. Thankfully she is being looked after in a care home now. I am still the legal guardian for my handicapped nephew. He has cerebylpulsy.

I appreciate you asking. My dad had prostate cancer but he passed ten years ago. My mom had a truckload of complications from a lifetime of smoking and she passed 19 years ago. My wife has dealt with some grandparents although we weren't primary care givers. So, it's okay now in terms of they're past pain and that's the best.

yikes. sorry to hear about your parents. i have an awful feeling my dad might be the first to pass on in a few years time. the frustrating thing is he doesn't seem to take his health all that seriously which doesn't help things im sure. but im the only one living at home now so im the one who must help out since im the closest. i of course don't mind it.
