Why do people complain about being lonely yet they never seem to open up to others?

Apparently loneliness is becoming an epidemic in the US, but when I try to make eye contact with people in public, they rarely ever make eye contact back. I would meet people in school then after we graduate, we no longer keep in touch with each other. At my gym classes, people would just workout then leave to go home immediately. Rarely do they talk to each other or ask to hangout with each other. None of my friends from high school keeps in touch. When I try to talk to guys, they rebuff me. At work, nobody wants to hangout after work. When people quit, people don't bother keeping in touch. People seem to be super picky when it comes to making friends. If you don't fit into the exact mold they are looking for, they won't bother having a coffee with you.

if loneliness is such a big problem, then why are people so closed off and picky?
