I know a guy who used to work for hydro one which pays crazily well and he developed a disability. He is still very good looking, but he lost over 90% of his old friends because after his disability he could no longer afford to buy beer and food at parties. He wasn’t a financial asset to his friends anymore so he got rejected by them.
These weren't friends, these were freeloaders. Friends are supposed to stay with us no matter what happens. The misunderstanding might be the result of people overreacting and considering simple acquaintances to be friendships. Therefore... No, income doesn't buy friends, income buys freeloaders, and sometimes it also buys what could be called "human toys" (I will leave the context of that "toy" remark to Your imagination). What constitutes one's ability to make friends is their potential, and what further facilitates the process of making friends is one's moral code.

If your income determines if you have friends or not, then they weren’t your real friends in the first place. Sadly most people use others for material things and don’t actually value the person or what the person has to offer.
It doesn't buy friends but indeed your friend's circle always tilt towards poeple with same or close of your own level (salary but education)...
