Is it a good idea to put your dog into shelter if you can't control it anymore?

Lately my female dog has been acting aggressive (barking mainly but just last week she tried to lunge onto another dog) with other dogs and nearly attempted to drag me to kill a cat; luckily nothing happened and the cat climbed on time but it took the 3rd super loud command for her to stop.

It hurts me because I've raised her since she was a puppy but she changed suddenly just 4 months ago. It's like a different personality, a side I never knew in her.

I don't want to then end up with a fine or possible jail time if this goes too far. Is this now the right time to place her in shelter? I don't think I can control her anymore. She's changing into something I don't want to be liable for. I've heard that if a dog taste blood for the first time or attempted to (she would've done so if she had succeeded in killing he cat), it's too late by then. Is it a good idea to give her up? I can't take it anymore.

I think I've made a mistake in selecting a Presa Canario as a first time dog owner. I really thought female Presas (female dogs in general) were less territorial, more docile and easier to handle/tame.

Why not get a dog trainer? If you really love your dog, I don’t think you should put her in a shelter until you’ve tried your best to work with her. What makes me feel so bad about this situation is that you’ve raised this dog, you’re her family, all she knows. Don't give up on her just because this teenage phase (that’s what it kinda sounds like) is a bit chaotic.


I have a medium sized dog, who I rescued 3 months after he was born. He was a great pup but difficult teen. Lots of biting, barking sporadically, and fear or being evicted because I was in an apartment and concerned my neighbors would complain. Couldn’t have the children in my family around him while we went through training. It was hard but I realized I just didn’t know what I was doing and how to handle that behavior. We made it through, maybe you can as well.

Thank you for sharing your story. It's sad that she has changed. I really wish she was back to the sweet, docile girl I've known her as. Hopefully it's the youthful stage she must be undergoing. I'll see what I can do.

I really hope you’re able to get her under control. If not then of course your safety has to come first. Presa Canario’s sort of remind me of pitbulls (kinda built the same), and really need not only structure but a firm hand. Otherwise it can be a dangerous situation, which I’d never advise anyone remain in.

Yes. She's a dog that can cause serious damages or even kill if it ever attacks anything. I think I made a mistake in getting a Presa Canario. I thought females were more easier to handle, docile.
