How far would you go do help your friend recover?

Let's say your friend, a very important person to you, is sick. They have insurance, and everything is covered, but for full recovery, special treatment is needed. And the hospital says, "we don't do it".

So you look in other hospitals, states/Lands, and countries. Oh... it's available as a private treatment, but the price is cosmic... $3 000 000.

so now... the question... how far would you go to help your friend? Would you take the highest possible loan? Would you sell your house? Would you beg strangers to donate to your friend's case? Would you ask for help from old power "friends" not knowing their price?

The whole thing is about daughters of my best friend, the twins prematurely born in February. After doing all needed to save their lives parents struggle with saving their health. Their sight is poor because required medical treatment damaged eyes. Two clinics offer experimental treatment and chances are 80% that girls will see without problems. The treatment is split for two stages and the whole cost is 1.5 million USD. Doubled, because there are two girls.

i would not. sorry. i don't insert myself into other peoples problems, as tough as that is, because it will drag my mental health down further. i was always forced to help financially for family, but i just don't want to do it anymore. i let peoples problems be their problems or else i will fall down a hole and forget about my own problems that need attending too also. i can help in other ways like emotionally/physically, but i will NOT be giving them money. i got taken advantage of throughout my life. no more.

Depends. I certainly wouldn't squander everything. I would help to a reasonable degree. They can apply for the loan, I can assist with the procedure. I can try to reach out to personal contacts, mutual friends whoever can help financially as well. I would bear a fair share as well, as much as is possible for me. They have their personal contacts, relatives and other people who could help them as well.

To give you a figure, I know 3,000,000 USD is not the same valuation as the currency we have, but if it was in INR, and that person is very close and reliable, then I might bear 100,000-200,000 (which is roughly ~3-5% of the total cost). Anything more than that, at my current worth, would be a gamble that I am not willing to risk.

I would think there have to be other options. Not just the surface level expensive options you've come across. I'd start researching what they do for recovery, see if it's anything I can assist with other than drugs, even without training. Like physical therapy stuff, can be done by anyone. Better if it's by a professional, but it's just movement and practice. That sort of stuff. No, I would not take out a 3 million dollar loan, no matter how much I cared about someone. If 3 million was "chump change" to my usual income, I would just pay for it, but if I had to take out a loan for it... No.

I have never been in this situation, nothing close to it. It's hard to imagine, because for one I'd probably be an emotional mess and wouldn't know what to do. Then I'd consider all of the things you mentioned and any other options. I might take out a loan, and also set up those things online, (it's morning for me and my brain is having a freeze lol) those things where you set a goal of how much money you need and share the situation so that others can donate if they have anything to donate.

I would try to make a GoFundMe/try to raise money for them, but I would not put myself into financial hardship because of it. I wouldn’t sell off my home (if I owned it), and I wouldn’t take out a giant loan that will take me the rest of my life to pay off. Death is a natural part of life. It is much healthier to accept it, grieve, and cherish the memory of that person rather than exhaust every aspect of your life trying to save them, especially when saving them is not guaranteed to be successful.

I would do anything physically for them but not financially. We all die and I wouldn’t risk you my financial future on the hopes the doctors would get something right. I have little faith in doctors and hospitals.
I would do what I can to make my friend comfortable, and the best of my ability pain free.
We all die, some sooner than others. Doctors at best only delay the inevitable.

I already know im not the greatest friend. I dont go out of my way for friends like i would for a significant other. I dont even go out of my way for family unless its my mom or grandpa. So be most i’d do for a friend and campaign and see if people donate money. I’d lend them a portion of my own funds as well

However since the Border Patrol has him processed as an illegal alien the government will arrange for a plane ride, probably by private ambulance airplane to what ever country offers this treatment ans will pay for rhe whole thing. In the phase of checking if it works its free and the risk is on the patient side. It's already proved, still experimental because not officially accepted, but clinical tests are done. It can take years now...

even the top surgeons in the world have a heart. appeal to them with your story. they can be required to do pro bono surgeries. and don't just speak to the surgeons. go above them. talk to their boss and tell them about the study that rejected you.

even if they can't do it, they can provide you with the proper resources, if any, to look where you need to to get the funding. that's the best advice i can give.
