791 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. My parents and ancestors were Irish Catholic. I went to Catholic grammar school from 1st through 8th grade and was an altar boy. I liked the school and being an altar boy.
I still have a soft spot for traditional priests and nuns as portrayed in movies like The Bells of St. Mary's, Going My Way, Angels with Dirty Faces, The Trouble With Angels, and Lilies of the Field.
I went to an all boy's Catholic high school in 9th grade. That school sucked. Then I attended a public high school from 10th through 12th grade.
Over the years, I was interested in questions about God and religions, so I read books about the history of Judaism and Christianity, world religions, mythology, and ancient history. I studied geology and other sciences. I studied cultural anthropology and a bit of philosophy.
I discovered that the world is a big place and every culture has their own creation myth and spiritual beliefs.
There is no reason to believe the claims of a desert tribe from the Middle East that got many of its ideas from Babylonians are true, especially when their historical claims have been thoroughly debunked by modern archaeologists and historians.
In the end, I decided that gods were mythology and religions were political.
I don't know if a consciousness created the universe. I have no idea if there are supernatural beings or if there is life after death. I don't know because there is no proof either way.
So I guess I'm agnostic.
I have my own spiritual beliefs - awe, reverence and gratitude for nature, creation, and the wonder of being alive to experience it. I think all beings from plants to animals are conscious. I express my appreciation and gratitude to them.
I kind of like some Native American and pagan beliefs in regards to reverence for nature.
I read something in Process Theology that I like. It said something like "All creatures are the universe observing itself." Therefore, maybe the universe, itself, is conscious.

10 moDepends on the parent. My father is a pretty devout christian, very set in his ways and patriarchal. I don’t think he’s one of those fake christians that says gays go to hell and whatnot but I definitely don’t follow strictly in the ways of Jehovah.
My mom was part of the 12-step program, which encourages a belief in a higher power but it’s not necessarily christian. She was raised it, and believes in it to a degree, but she sees God as less of a man and more of a woman (specifically a black woman mammy type of character, but we don’t need to get into why that is). My beliefs are probably closer with hers in that we both have our own ideas of God.
I’m of the belief that if God created everything then as a creation of God, I am of God, and as such I am God. This applies to you, too. You are also God because you are of God. So are our pets, our friends, the trees, the rivers, all of it carries the divinity of the infinite God. That’s a good place to summarize it, I guess10 Reply478 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Well my mo. Was a Catholic, I'm not sure what my dad was.
But I believe that they both believed in God. And so do I I will always have faith I've never have read the Bible because I feel there's to much missing I believe it was re written so many time and to many things taken out of it because someone doesn't want us to know the truth.. we are made with water and atoms. Atoms broke down Equals energy
If your on the east coast. I'm on the west coast we text or talk on the phone if you know anything about energy and what it feels like becoming one while making love well we can get to the same places with out even touching I believe we are meant to be a hole different type of human and more and more the truths are starting to come out.
But I havevalways said no matter what we are told or what you believe. Always have faith
I think our world is filled with liars cheaters look at Mr Trump his. second time around. Did he do anything for the little people. No. Did who do something for all the rich yes he did he is greedy he is in for him self just like most of the people out there what can I take from you
If people don't wake up we are all going to be fucked. If people are waiting for the second coming of christ. We'll you need to wake him up with in you first the bloody battle is with in us. People are fighting them selves know right from wrong but going to the evil side making life all about themselves in stead of becoming one with self one with others. But have faith the universe is still present and is not going anywhere. Always remembering you can find yourself the universe has your back if you wantbto believe in something powerful believe in water yourself and the universe because change is happening right now10 Reply
10 moNot really, but maybe... sort of. I've had a lot of "parents since I was 13, so I'll stick to who raised me until that point and basically shaped my viewpoints on it, my Great Grandparents.
G. Grandmother was kind of preachy and at times sick in the head about it. To her, any kind of Christian was Christian. I found my self going to a 7th day advantanst church and quickly learned why I think organized religion is shit. It was the people in it that made me hate it and not the religious teachings themselves. They were evil. One second they'd be reciting holy scripture and the next they'd be pushing me down when nobody is looking in order to win a fucking foot race (real story). A key memory though is with my G. Grandfather. He was quick to call out people in general that used religion as some sort of social crutch. "Oh God Damn it cotton picker, you're a Christian and like I give a shit!" He was awesome.
After them I went through 3 years of brutal hell with my mom and then moved in with my fake aunt... a foster child of my G. Grandparents. My study of religion in general became more of a scholory hobby than believe where I jerk off to feeling and shit.
I'm just a realist and I don't need to have servatude to anything in order to study it and understand it, or be some sheep in a group just to have friends...
00 ReplyPfft... "religious views".
My mother called herself a "humanist". That is to say she had an unwarranted trust in the ability of humanity to get things done. A kind of optimistic atheism. That said, she also believed in astrology, so to say she was "soft atheist" is somewhat of an understatement. I believe she has got better in the decades since.
My late father, from what I could gather, was a philosophical thelemite. He didn't believe in any gods, though his strange obsession with Aleister Crowley, alchemy and mysticism was more than a little disturbing. I didn't get to learn that much more about him since he died when I was 18.
I, to grossly oversimplify the matter, am a Nihilist. An antitheistic Nihilist. I regard all religions and morality with contempt. I see existence as no more than a web of chemical reactions running unconstrained and leading us inevitably all toward death. A very welcome death. All human obsession with meaning or purpose is trivial bullsh! t, and trying to conjure up nonsense narratives due to inability to accept the arbitrary nature of existence is nothing more than weakness and rot.10 Reply
9 moPop was from a long line of Quakers whose arrival on this continent predated the pilgrims. Mom came from a group whose religious root are unclear although Methodist is highly likely. Dad was predominantly biblical with few alterations, Mom was predominantly Biblical hearsay. My theological journey was been widespread to include Presbyterian, Mormon, Methodist, Methocostal, Seventh Day Adventist, and discussions with Jehovah's Witnesses, I worked with a NezPierce Native American who spoke to me about his religious beliefs. My family is ripe with Autism, including many Asperger's cases so you can imagine that the pieces have to fit. Luckily with many religious sources I have a lot of material to source from.

10 moMy mother was brought up catholic , my father devout atheist , religion rarely came up in our house before my sister chose to be baptized and immediately considered herself Christian.. that’s was fun ! .
Me? if I had to pick the closest description of myself in that sense , it would be an agnostic atheist but I’m generally very accepting of people who choose any particular flavor of deity , as they generally deny the existence of just one less god than I do.
Slightly cynical but I agree with Ricky Gervais - if your born in India your probably a Muslim , if your born in America your probably a Christian … that’s a coincidence , that your born under the right god? “ isn’t THAT lucky ! 🍀😜00 Reply525 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Meh. Kind of. I do many of the things they did, which are no longer "trendy" and mainstream, but I liked them growing up and don't think some random group of elected humans should dictate major changes to the faith. I'm generally more of a purist. Stick to what's in the book and learn it so that the words and their meaning are written in your hearts.

m 10 moboth of my parents were born and raised Catholics... but they are not the most strictly religious people, they do "observe the basics of it"
as they say... "light Catholics"
although I was baptized as Catholic when I was a child... I'm agnostic myself00 Reply
10 moMy parents were Catholics, and my brothers and I were baptised. No complaints about that, but I have a complete different view and understanding of religious symbols. Let's say I do have respect for the real teachings, like the 10 commandments for instance, tolerance, peace, respect for other people of any religion, etc. Actually my philosophy goes more in the direction of Buddhism.
00 Reply496 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. Broadly, yes - we're all Christian - but how we live it out is a bit different.
My dad was Anglican, his parents were Salvation Army Officers. I'm Baptist at the moment, but I've been Anglican, Baptist, Evangelical, Non-Denominational and Methodist.00 Reply
10 moPretty much the same. Parents were Atheists without knowing it. Whereas I know I'm an Atheist. Gods and Goddesses are inventions of humans made to serve humans.
