While he might have his own reasons, I'd think that it's because love is fleeting, but friendship is something that usually lasts very long, if it is true friendship that is. I know a few guys who have relinquished their ties with good friends for their girlfriends and once they broke up what did they have left? Nothing. Same has happened with women also with their boyfriends. Love is a powerful emotion and it can make you think it'll last forever. But in truth most relationships end in a break up. And it takes a heavy toll on the person and a lot of people turn to their friends for support. But when you don't have friends to turn to after a break up what do you? After you've chased them away because your partner didn't like them, if that partner happens to leave, you'll be left empty handed. The longer the friendship, the deeper the bond is, so it's perfectly understandable that he would stand up for his friend. If I was him, I would continue to stand up for my friend, but of course I would tell her that her actions towards my partner are inexcusable.

You need to be more lenient of your boyfriend. She's a high school friend, and people tend to treasure old friends forever. Just trust your boyfriend, and simply ignore that girl.

Why do you always have to bring it up, if that's the only thing you argue about?
Simply never mention her again, and have an argument free relationship.
