I'm taking a weightlifting class in college and it starts in a week and I have tennis shoes but I don't really like them that much and I wear chacos for everything
I wear Birks a lot. The problem I found when wearing them when I'm active is that even with the straps, my feet can slip off of the soles. It might be a little better with chacos since you can strap them down tighter, but I think the lateral support you would get from an athletic shoe would be safer. You could try as a compromise something like this:

I wouldn't wear those for lifting weights, tennis shoes or any closed toed shoes would be much better
