Do you consider a woman showing her shoulders or a bra strap indecent?

In high school we had a dress code, girls were not allowed to show off too much of their shoulders, so no tops unless the straps were wide enough to cover the shoulders. Bra straps weren’t allowed to be visible. Earlier today I saw a video on how Mormons dress modestly and the no shoulder rule was also mentioned.

I never understood this. How are women’s shoulders considered indecent? And pretty much every woman wears a bra, that’s not a secret. Now I’m not talking about tops riding so low you can see half heir bra, but a simple strap?

So what’s the deal? Are they so sexy even at a young age girls should cover them up? Lmao

I have no clue why this is a rule. Maybe it’s to teach kids about being professional and modest when in a working environment. That I understand. But kids generally don’t take school seriously anyway.

I think schools need to be a lot more strict about things like dress code and have professional looking uniforms but also make school last for less hours and only touch on critaical topics like math, language arts, history, and science.

Other subjects like home ec, art, PE, should be a separate program entirely and have a more laid back attitude about things like dress code.

Many yong people don’t understand the importance of professionalism and presenting yourself.

I don’t know if his system would work. I figure a lot of people would be upset about it.

I would love to hear others opinions on this.

I don't consider a girl showing her shoulders or bra strap is indecent. Hell, I'm a teenager and I'm always showing either my shoulders or my bra straps. I have shirts that show the main body of the bra (no cleavage). I don't consider it indecent at all.

No, shoulderless tops are not "indecent" but there's a reason why they aren't allowed in formal business settings either. Bear in mind that this isn't a sexist requirement: men are expected to wear suits or at least a shirt and trowsers in these settings too. The reason is that sex and sexiness have no place in a work environment, and sexy clothing has no place either. Shoulderless tops are sexy. After hours, they're nothing controversial - but at work, not appropriate.

It seems to me that, schools try to replicate workplace dress codes which I don't think is fair or appropriate. I understand it's a learning environment, but as far as I know no school has tried to stop pupils from flirting during break times. At work this wouldn't be ok, which is where thr parallel stops making sense.

No, not at all indecent! Most women wear bras. Most people know this, and sometimes, straps show, and so what? Most people wear underwear, and sometimes pantylines show, in some clothes, so is that indecent too?
I say NO, quite the opposite!! I kind of like seeing bra straps, and maybe a little lace, with a low-cut top, and pantylines, and like knowing she is wearing something comfortable.
Yes, it might be 'tacky' wearing an over-the-shoulder bra, and a strapless sundress, but who am I to judge if she is comfortable, and smiling at the picnic? :) :)

I personally think that innerwear should stay as innerwear. I know certain types of undergarments are meant to be showing a bit but generally I think people should wear the appropriate undergarments for their clothing. So like, a strapless bra is better for strapless tops and dresses. It makes every other look timeless and effortless every single time.

When I was in high school there were dress codes for girls that required bras and stockings/panty hose. The girls started rebelling because of "women's lib" and refusing to wear those things. Eventually the school started ignoring the rule.

A woman is not a problem when showing. A girl there lies the problem. Kids dont need to be attracting attention like that from older men. Some of them have self control issues. Those of us that think that they should dress more appropriately are thought to want to take away their right to dress as they want. I just say it to try to protect them from other peoples bad intentions.

As a guy trust me, we’re not looking at a woman’s shoulders. Never really bothered me, but in most cases like that the rules were written 30+ years ago and have barely changed since. My school had a similar dress code, but it applied to men as well. No tank tops unless the strap was at least 3 fingers wide. Why they chose fingers I’ll never know, not exactly an accurate measure of size.

I don’t. Indecent is wearing those see through leggings and wearing a thong underneath. Girls did this in high school and I thought it was very disgusting. It’s cool if you dress like that for one guy while it’s just you two. But the whole world? If I got with you it wouldn’t even feel special. Everybody has seen what you have to offer.

It’s not indecent, no, but it is unprofessional, and that’s why it’s prohibited by most school dress codes. Schools want to encourage their students to dress professionally because that’s the way they’re going to be expected to dress in a formal work environment when they’re older. I don’t see anything wrong with that, it’s just another way to prepare them for having a career in the real world.

I feel there is nothing wrong in a woman showing her shoulders/bra strap. The issue with some is that a bra is considered underwear - So " A lady should never show her underwear in public. " This is a carryover from times long past, but the Mormons would still follow this line of thought.

Most people don't care where I am. I don't care either. Some people don't want their bra straps showing though and buy strapless bras or just cover it up.
But on the other hand, I suppose it's still underwear and usually in society people will say something about people showing their underwear, even those guys showing their boxers get comments. I gave up on that fight when my daughter was young. I figured most of the time she had 3 layers of clothing the bra, the tank top and the tshirt when she was in school. As a parent I was more concerned with the selling of drugs on campus, students having sex behind the buildings and in cars and having sex with the occasional teacher.

I think school dress codes are so pedantic because if left to interpretation someone would push it too far - In a sense you are lucky most of the world apart from the US had uniforms in school to cover dress code - Children wear uniforms at most school levels - Only getting a choice in 3rd level education

People don't get it because we're becoming a society that is allowing more and more things. Cropped tops are being allowed in schools, booty shorts are being allowed too, etc etc. Modesty and class aren't treasured like it used to be. People even go to Opera shows in sweat pants and flip flops.

In regular settings, I don't see any issue with it. However, I can kinda understand it in professional settings. Men are expected to wear suits; they'd be seen as unprofessional if their shoulders were out or if their underwear were showing. Bras are underwear, so the same applies to women. So in professional settings, I can see why it's indecent, but casual wear/night out wear, it's totally fine.
