I've not really heard of it as a thing before, but I would actually agree with them. It's not so much the length of the philtrum itself, but the resulting shape of the mouth - a short philtrum results in a kind of upturned mouth, slightly open at rest, which is extremely attractive. I remember thinking about it years ago, and coming to the conclusion that a small, upturned mouth, and a small, upturned nose, are the two factors that contribute the most to a woman's face being attractive (people make a lot of fuss about eyes, but they matter far less).
The evolutionary reasoning is probably that it exposes more of the inside of the top lip, making it appear fuller - the opposite of thinning lips, which are a sign of ageing and therefore reduced fertility (the same reason botox and lip fillers are also a thing). A long, undefined philtrum and thin upper lip can also be symptomatic of development abnormalities such as fetal alcohol syndrome, and again those tend to be considered unattractive for evolutionary reasons (they don't suggest a healthy, fertile mate).
That's not to say someone can't be attractive without it - it's just that people on the internet like to talk about their idea of absolute perfection.
well i have kind of a long phitrum but i still have upturned lips? at least thats what i see lol
but alexa is still cute
Do yourself a favor and avoid reddit. Its full of smart dumb people. didn't even know what this phlimflam thing was until I read it (lol reddit) hereand will probably forget.
This is a stupid beauty standards setup by artists who have nothing better to do than measure the centimeters of someone's skulls and catogorize them and then creating their own artists standard of beauty.
Autists not. Artists. Le sigh, I wish I can edit.
Hahhaha
Thank you for adding the visually and written definition of what a Philtrum is because I was so lost haha.
To answer, I would say that full lips have always been lusted after and desired in media and outside of it. The Philtrum just helps accentuate full lips which is why I feel some people see it as more attractive the more pronounced it is. Just my theory though.
As someone who has a short philtrum based on the definition of the second picture. Its a weird thing to focus on but hey we live in a society where the emphasis on physical presentation has been magnified more than ever.
Its all about the over all balnce of how it all come out
I will not really count ratings all that much regardless
I assume in the over all face shape it may be effecting the symatrical of it all (Is that the right word?)
Maybe hehe

I understand it. People like to openly hate & harshly judge those who they feel are superior/inferior to either themselves or a certain standard they prefer. Which causes them to latch onto anything they feel highlights a negative characteristic about a person. In this case, it's a minor detail about her face that doesn't even make or break it since it's not on any of the extreme's ends. But by hyper-focusing on the little detail (they see as a flaw) they can feel better about themselves while keeping things simple enough to feel like they're right.
And it's probably glorified to them because they have a very linear interpretation of what would make someone objectively attractive. They'd probably be the types to use the same measurements of attraction for all humans. Not taking into account different skull & facial feature shapes, types, dimensions, etc.
I think honestly this is real crap, the only important matter is harmony. If a face is harmonic with long or short philtrum, it is nice. I think honestly sometimes people on Reddit have too much free time and nothing to think about so the full the time with this crap.
exacly lol
You ladies should take a page from the men’s book and stop having such an eye for detail. I legit would never even break down a woman’s face like that. The whole package is what I’m looking at, in totality, I wouldn’t notice the distance between the nose and top lip in five lifetimes of staring, lmao. File this one away with the “thigh gap”, if you’re looking to impress the fellas, I can assure we aren’t going to notice either way😂
So you don't care about thigh gap?
Hell no, lmao, I wouldn’t have ever given it a thought if women didn’t mention it first. I’d notice thick thighs vs thin thighs, with no real preference of one over the other, other than maybe a guy who prefers thick over thin or vice versa. But we aren’t staring at you like “are her thighs touching or nah?” This stuff all only exists in the world of women. You put way more pressure on yourselves than you need to, when society already puts you under enough as it is. Don’t manufacture more of it for yourselves with imaginary flaws lmao. If I could tell anything to women, I’d say “look like YOU.” You want to do minor things like makeup or staying relatively fit, I’m all for it, whatever makes you feel good. But when we get into “I need to completely model myself after Kim Kardashian” or whoever your beauty icon is, that’s troubling. My girlfriend watches all these Real Housewives shows, so many have plastic surgery or whatever treatments, and they all look like they’re trying to have the same face. Like the chick who used to be married to Scottie Pippen…clearly just went into the plastic surgeon’s office and said “give me the Kardashian Special.” When did we decide her face (also fake as a three dollar bill, by the way) was the ideal? I think she’s pretty and all, but I’m not like “oh my god, what a timeless beauty, I wish every woman from here on out would aim to look like that.” We all look how we look. We all want to be super attractive. It’s not in the cards for most of us, so you just do the best you can. And obviously it goes without saying that all these beauty icons don’t roll out of bed that way, either, you’re seeing “the finished product”, usually. I think I saw Kim K with no makeup once and I was just like “meh.” I’m sure it’s the same for most of these other supposed beauties. I’m just saying that I hate to see the ladies beat themselves up over these minor imperfections that probably aren’t even imperfections to start with.
Well i dont have any of those insecurities but in my humble opinion women with nice legs which have thigh gaps and stuff look way better... I don't know why lol but that's my point of view hehe
Haha, well, that’s good that you’re able to keep it in perspective. And you’re certainly entitled to your opinion on thigh gaps, I’m just saying I wish women wouldn’t beat themselves up over not having one, just because us guys honestly wouldn’t even notice, let alone care😝
Okay then. I guess men only care to get a girl lol they don't care about other stuff
Hi Marianna,
I have no idea why. I know a guy who criticized a girl's big toe when i pointed out how beautiful she was. My thought at the time was 'omg I didn't realize she was so perfect all you could criticize was her big toe and I didn't realize, omg, you were so stupid'.
I despair at times.
hahahah
haha interesting
It's reddit and those guys are weirdos. I have good face proportions and symmetry, my philtrum isn't especially long because I have naturally voluminous upper lip. With a thin upper lip someone will have long philtrum.
Yess i have a long philtrum i guess
I have never heard that word before this and I don’t think that it changes anything one way or the other. But Reddit is it’s own animal. I have never cared to get on because they always have the weirdest conversations.
exaclyy
She looks like she can grow a moustache patch over there.
But you're mostly right, let's not give her a hard time because one of her body parts isn't idealistic.
hahahaa
Some people are just into what they are into. But reddit is a strange place and I don't understand LOTS of things on there lol
exacly! but how can a phitrum a literal skin thingie detract from someone's beauty? I mean alexa looks HOT
I really have no idea. Personally it does not for me. But some people are different. Some people also like to knit pick
well i am not syaing she is the hottest but she for sure isn't ugly just because of her phitrum.
or nit pickers
no she isn't ugly at all
Some people just have too much time on their hands. I've seen a number of VERY attractive women, who I thought were gorgeous, criticized for having foreheads that were too big. I mean, I know I'm not the pickiest guy out there, but come ON.
I can assume that there is an indication of poor health.
A lot of issues cause face deformities, like poor lifestyles, including mouth breathing. Nose breathing is like a real health hack, but only because mouth breathing is so damaging in comparison.
Search it up yourself, mouth breathing elongates philtrum.
I wouldn't have even noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out, and I'd never heard that word before.
yeah i AM SUREE that people on Reddit are just crazy assholes lol
I also didn't know that before those redditors
I know people there have their own views on everything
The world spends too much wasting time on bullshit who cares there are way more important things to worry about or do people have too much time on their hands?
Exactly
Are people really that annoying these days? I never even notice philtrums. Societal beauty standards are already pretty high, but that is taking it too far, I think it's ridiculous.
she's unattractive because of her philtrum length? that's just a joke. she's unattractive for other reasons
what are the reasonsss
hahah yeah
lol...
Fucking A. He's right.
I love when women make up things to feel insecure about.
I personally am not insecure about that lol
Many men On Reddit were under rating Alexa just because of her philtrum lol
No, but add this to the list of thigh gaps, collarbones, labia size, and 'hip dips' of things that no straight guy even gives a shit about but women think they do.
Lol to be honest we women just arr more visual i guess... we have different views about beauty!
I have noticeable collarbones and thigh gap (just not HUGE) AND i also have minimal hip dips they aren't very noticeable though! I guess that's why i don't care about that lol
you understand I don't know even really what the term 'hip dip' means. So again, it's something women made up to feel insecure about.
Well jip dips are the things in your hip bones
don't care. straight men don't care about that shit.
Hahhaa why though? Not even about cellulite? I don't have any and i have proofffff
Because - a chick is either 'fuckable' or not to most guys. It can be a number of factors. I'm sure there's even guys out there who have a cellulite fetish, lol.
Hahhqhq really?
There are guys who are into getting their balls punched by women. Anything's possible.
Hahahha this is weird but i will tske it
Take*
I don't take it. I don't want my balls punched, haha
Hahahha okay then🤣
No clue who she is
but there goes another chick with mad makeup
they at least gave her 7
she's 6/10 to to me
You mean Alexa right? Is it only the makeup or her whole face?
yes alexa
Hmmm the other two girls look better though yes?
second one, she would be even look better without that stupid nose ring
third one is meh u can see her upper lip is fake af
Really? How?
she has lip injection its obvious
Yeah i just wanted to be sure... well i found her on Pinterest soooo
Thank you for explaining to me what that was.. I thought it was the thing you use to strum a guitar!
I agree with the VERY last word you said!
Her philtrum length was the first thing I noticed. 2/10
is it really that bad
Why does philtrum even matter? Honestly I never notice it.
Seeing as how this is the first time I'm hearing about the controversy, I think you're probably not the only person
Your first mistake is going on reddit, seriously thst place is a dumpster fire. Most men do not care about that.
I had never even heard the word "philtrum" before leading this post.
Does this mean Tom Selleck has a long philtrum?
Its different for every person. Different proportions.
Hmm interesting
I agree with you. A short one would fit some and a long one would fit others. And overall it's a fairly insignificant aspect of beauty.
Never heard of it. The Philtrum is not a big deal for me. Unless they look like a cartoon face or something.
I have no idea, some people need to go outside and touch grass.
I never even once thought about this until now and most guys are the same.
Don't let others tell you what is attractive.
Simple
To be perfectly honest you're not, you're just a very intelligent beautiful girl with an open mind, I admire that in any girl I am with.
It's more of a masculine trait anyway. Reddit is just full of closet homosexuals.
reddit is a damaged site of mob mentality for sick people. pay it no mind
On the internet there is a lot of "keyboard warriors"
is my philtrum long enough?
I haven't seen u lol
It's you?
yes... (no, lol)
Being slut in euphoria sweet her well, she look bad in real life
i dont even know what that is.
Hahaha okay ok
No, you aren’t the only one.
I don't understand at all
hahah exacly
Most strangest post ever quit reddit lol 😆
I understand it and it is really sort of ignorant.
Nope not only one
yeah i mean before Reddit i never even noticed anything like the phitrum and never cared about anyone's phitrum lenghths :/
