I've not really heard of it as a thing before, but I would actually agree with them. It's not so much the length of the philtrum itself, but the resulting shape of the mouth - a short philtrum results in a kind of upturned mouth, slightly open at rest, which is extremely attractive. I remember thinking about it years ago, and coming to the conclusion that a small, upturned mouth, and a small, upturned nose, are the two factors that contribute the most to a woman's face being attractive (people make a lot of fuss about eyes, but they matter far less).
The evolutionary reasoning is probably that it exposes more of the inside of the top lip, making it appear fuller - the opposite of thinning lips, which are a sign of ageing and therefore reduced fertility (the same reason botox and lip fillers are also a thing). A long, undefined philtrum and thin upper lip can also be symptomatic of development abnormalities such as fetal alcohol syndrome, and again those tend to be considered unattractive for evolutionary reasons (they don't suggest a healthy, fertile mate).
That's not to say someone can't be attractive without it - it's just that people on the internet like to talk about their idea of absolute perfection.

Do yourself a favor and avoid reddit. Its full of smart dumb people. didn't even know what this phlimflam thing was until I read it (lol reddit) hereand will probably forget.
This is a stupid beauty standards setup by artists who have nothing better to do than measure the centimeters of someone's skulls and catogorize them and then creating their own artists standard of beauty.
Thank you for adding the visually and written definition of what a Philtrum is because I was so lost haha.
To answer, I would say that full lips have always been lusted after and desired in media and outside of it. The Philtrum just helps accentuate full lips which is why I feel some people see it as more attractive the more pronounced it is. Just my theory though.
As someone who has a short philtrum based on the definition of the second picture. Its a weird thing to focus on but hey we live in a society where the emphasis on physical presentation has been magnified more than ever.
Its all about the over all balnce of how it all come out
I will not really count ratings all that much regardless
I assume in the over all face shape it may be effecting the symatrical of it all (Is that the right word?)

I understand it. People like to openly hate & harshly judge those who they feel are superior/inferior to either themselves or a certain standard they prefer. Which causes them to latch onto anything they feel highlights a negative characteristic about a person. In this case, it's a minor detail about her face that doesn't even make or break it since it's not on any of the extreme's ends. But by hyper-focusing on the little detail (they see as a flaw) they can feel better about themselves while keeping things simple enough to feel like they're right.
And it's probably glorified to them because they have a very linear interpretation of what would make someone objectively attractive. They'd probably be the types to use the same measurements of attraction for all humans. Not taking into account different skull & facial feature shapes, types, dimensions, etc.I think honestly this is real crap, the only important matter is harmony. If a face is harmonic with long or short philtrum, it is nice. I think honestly sometimes people on Reddit have too much free time and nothing to think about so the full the time with this crap.
You ladies should take a page from the men’s book and stop having such an eye for detail. I legit would never even break down a woman’s face like that. The whole package is what I’m looking at, in totality, I wouldn’t notice the distance between the nose and top lip in five lifetimes of staring, lmao. File this one away with the “thigh gap”, if you’re looking to impress the fellas, I can assure we aren’t going to notice either way😂
Hi Marianna,
I have no idea why. I know a guy who criticized a girl's big toe when i pointed out how beautiful she was. My thought at the time was 'omg I didn't realize she was so perfect all you could criticize was her big toe and I didn't realize, omg, you were so stupid'.
I despair at times. It's reddit and those guys are weirdos. I have good face proportions and symmetry, my philtrum isn't especially long because I have naturally voluminous upper lip. With a thin upper lip someone will have long philtrum.
I have never heard that word before this and I don’t think that it changes anything one way or the other. But Reddit is it’s own animal. I have never cared to get on because they always have the weirdest conversations.
She looks like she can grow a moustache patch over there.
But you're mostly right, let's not give her a hard time because one of her body parts isn't idealistic. Some people are just into what they are into. But reddit is a strange place and I don't understand LOTS of things on there lol
Some people just have too much time on their hands. I've seen a number of VERY attractive women, who I thought were gorgeous, criticized for having foreheads that were too big. I mean, I know I'm not the pickiest guy out there, but come ON.
I can assume that there is an indication of poor health.
A lot of issues cause face deformities, like poor lifestyles, including mouth breathing. Nose breathing is like a real health hack, but only because mouth breathing is so damaging in comparison.
Search it up yourself, mouth breathing elongates philtrum.I wouldn't have even noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out, and I'd never heard that word before.
The world spends too much wasting time on bullshit who cares there are way more important things to worry about or do people have too much time on their hands?
Are people really that annoying these days? I never even notice philtrums. Societal beauty standards are already pretty high, but that is taking it too far, I think it's ridiculous.
she's unattractive because of her philtrum length? that's just a joke. she's unattractive for other reasons
I love when women make up things to feel insecure about.
No clue who she is
but there goes another chick with mad makeup
they at least gave her 7
she's 6/10 to to meThank you for explaining to me what that was.. I thought it was the thing you use to strum a guitar!
I agree with the VERY last word you said! Her philtrum length was the first thing I noticed. 2/10
Why does philtrum even matter? Honestly I never notice it.
Seeing as how this is the first time I'm hearing about the controversy, I think you're probably not the only person
