Somewhat of an issue at work - what you do in this situation?

Anonymous

For my job, we can wear regular clothes as long as they are appropriate, clean, and not offensive. When it becomes hot out, we are allowed to wear shorts. We cannot wear shorts that are too short obviously and our handbook states management gets to decide what is and isn't deemed too short.

Well, today, someone came and told me "a lot" of people were commenting about the shorts I had on and making a big deal about them (like saying my butt was hanging out). My butt was not hanging out. I wore these same shorts to work last year without any issues. I actually got a couple compliments on them and other girls said they were cute. None of my managers said anything last year and none of my managers said anything today either.

Due to the embarrassment (I was seriously called out in front of other co-workers), I told my lead I was going to go home at lunch. I no longer felt comfortable working. I didn't specify why. I just said I was going to go home and she said she'd let my supervisor know.

A co-worker working next to me today had shorts on that were VERY similar to the length of mine and she was not called out.

People also routinely wear tight leggings which we aren't supposed to wear. Our handbook says NO tight/form fitting attire. If we do wear leggings or yoga pants, we have to have a long shirt over them that covers our butt and crotch. None of the people wearing the tight athletic pants have long shirts on and nothing ever gets said to them.

Yesterday, a co-worker of mine had a shirt on that was showing some of her stomach. It was creeping up a lot. Nothing was said to her. Our handbook states we can't wear shirts that show our midriff, breasts/cleavage and can't be cut down the sides if they're sleevless and no spaghetti straps.

I was really bothered by this situation. It felt like I was being singled out and harassed. I'm now afraid to wear shorts again to work.

What should I do about this? What would you do?

I should also note a couple more details - I had underwear on and they were not showing anywhere. Not in the back or front. My underwear were not hanging out at all. I also did not have exposed pubes or anything. I guess what bothered me the most was how I was approached. I mean this person was not a manager. If it was an issue, a manager should be alerted and address it privately. I'm debating on whether I should discuss the matter with my supervisor in the morning.
